Description
It is no secret that physical activity is a necessary part of being healthy. We don’t need to go to the gym every day, run for miles, or lift weights to be healthy. We can achieve numerous health benefits just from regularly walking. It can be difficult to find the time to exercise, but a simple stroll is all we need to enjoy some real health benefits.Forest bathing seems to significantly mitigate the root cause of a multitude of ailments: stress. Excess stress can play a role in headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, and arthritis, among many other ailments.
Leisurely forest walks, compared with urban walks, show a 12.4 percent decrease in the stress hormone cortisol, a seven percent decrease in sympathetic nerve activity, a 1.4 percent decrease in blood pressure, and a 5.8 percent decrease in heart rate.
Trees give off volatile essential oils called phytoncides that have antimicrobial properties and may influence immunity. One Japanese study showed a rise in number and activity of immune cells called natural killer cells, which fight viruses and cancer, among people who spent three days and two nights in a forest versus people who took an urban trip. This benefit lasted for more than a month after the forest trip.
Don’t worry if you don’t have three days to spend in the forest. A study in the United Kingdom of nearly 20,000 people showed that spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature improved self-reported health and well-being. It doesn’t matter whether the 120 minutes represents one long trip, or several shorter visits to nature.
When walking consider the following:
The most rewarding part of walking is being connected to the nature and exploring beautiful landscapes. Pause to connect with the surroundings that have you have been passing by. Look around for the things you may have been missing, take pictures, and record your thoughts and impressions in a nature journal.
Go to an area where you can find peace and quiet, this has a beneficial impact on every aspect of your being.
Learning about the places, animals, environments you are photographing and exploring is also rewarding.
Capturing beauty in images that will inspire the viewer to feel the same awe that you experiencing is also worth taking into account. Nature photography is two-fold: the opportunity to share what you have seen with others, and the opportunity to revisit what you have seen when you can’t be out in a natural environment.
There is too much obsession over sharpness and focus in photography. Motion blur is fine and often adds more energy to your shot! So if you get blur in photos, treat it like a ‘beautiful mistake’.
Just look around when you walk - nature has such such a rich imagination.
