Interesting. It looks like that lightsaber just slipped in at the end, huh? Hahaha
It looks like your work is made in a LOT more segments than anything I've done. I tend to not go past five layers per picture, for some reason.
On a random note, that vibrant red on top of gray-scale looks awesome.

Its usually only a couple of layers at most. I flatten the picture regularly or just paint straight onto one layer. An old habit from using a crap computer that cant handle many layers for a long time.

My computer can handle it, but I just prefer fewer layers myself. I get way into what I'm doing, and if I have to dig through fifteen layers to find the right one, I get slowed down or lazy, and end up adding wierd things to the wrong layers.
I usually have the line layer on top, a color layer on top or bottom depending on the style of picture, a layer of light, and a layer of shade. Then on bigger pictures, a layer of misc. stuff/top layer touchup.

Yeah too many layers makes it confusing. I try to do a quick reference for lighting and lines, lock those layers and do everything else separate, referring back to those layers to make sure everything is ok.
Painting under lines and those lines being a main part of the picture only seems to cause me problems now. If I want to change something I have to do the layer below as well as the lines layer.

Yeah, I saw how some stuff popped in and out like that throughout the picture. Using your own outline as a reference instead of drawing on it is different to me, but it's definitely worked well for you.
I go under lines a lot because I like cartoony looking pictures most of the time, too. Oversaturated colors under black outlines. (the outline = by far the most fun part for me to actually do)
But it'll never come out looking like a great realistic picture that way, and does take more work if you're trying to look more realistic under it like that, yeah.
Someday I'll start doing more realistic painting projects again... The more good ones I see, the more likely I am to! (the +follow on you has already nudged me. Hahaha)

I love the cartoony looks as well but it just takes me too much time. I'm trying to get more feeling with less effort right now. Helps me put out more than one picture a year
And you should get back to realistic painting. Its fun

For m, it's the exact opposite. I can do cartoony pictures in about a third of the time as realistic pictures. I can pull together a character or pose outline in around five minutes, and then I just clean it up, select empty spaces, fill color in a layer underneath, and start doing other details or (if I want to) shading/lighting.
If I do something cartoony without shading, the process is super-quick for me in comparison.
I imagine it's just because it's like being a little kid again. You just color inside the lines. Hahaha
But I should do more realistic stuff. Those are more of a challenge, tend to look better to more people, and would actually be practicing something I could use practice with.

Haa it is like coloring between the lines...except I'm never happy with the lines and always want to change them.
Gogo practice now!

There's the difference, then! I love the lines part. Every now and then I want to change something, but I'm never as disappointed by my linework as I am by my coloring work.
I think I will. I have an idea for a more realistic-styled picture (two actually) that I'll probably get to next week. (Drawing break this week, because I managed to really strain my wrist and thumb with my terrible drawing setup last week.)

Well look after your thumb and wrist. Ill keep an eye out for any more realistic stuff.
