I saw one of these fellows on Ebay years back, but it wasn't until recently that it popped up again and I snagged it. It was purchased new in Olm, Germany by its previous owner and brought over to the US, before being sold on Ebay. In perfect condition, and super cute!Β I just love this little guy.ΒThe founder of Steiff, Margarete Steiff, was diagnosed with polio as a child which left her with both legs paralyzed and pain in her right arm. Despite it, she learned to sew and founded her own clothing business when she was 25 years old. She then made her first plush when she was 27--an elephant--which became the first Steiff plush when the company was established the following year in 1880. Even today, each Steiff plush is hand sewn in Germany and made with mohair, alpaca, cashmere, 100% cotton velvet, 100% wool felt, and woven plush fabrics. SteiffUSA

Yes, I don't know what it is, but I suspect it may be the same problem that I get wih some other European manufacturers, and with 'studio plush', in that they try to make them too realistic, and end up in the so called 'uncanny valley'. Having said that, some Steiff have struck me as looking akward without looking terribly realistic. In any case, this guy is fine

Hahaha yup. I've definitely crossed that line myself a few times. It's a challenge getting the balance right. But yeah, some of the Steiff just look...weird. Maybe they were trying for cartoony?Β

I have to admit to not being a huge fan of a lot of Steiff plush, but this one is really nice!

Me too, but there are a select few that I really like. This being one of them. ^^ Some others tend to look a little bit possessed, if I may say so...
