In the deep caverns where light seldom touches, the crossbow known as Shadowthorn was wrought from the very essence of dusk. Created during a clandestine ritual by the Drow enchantress Xanaphia Nightbinder, it was intended to be the harbinger of silent ends, a tool for those who operate from the veil of secrecy.
Properties of Shadowthorn:
Whisperwind String: This crossbow is enchanted to make no sound when fired, its string’s vibrations silenced by powerful magic, allowing its wielder to make attacks without revealing their location.
Shadowmeld Bolt: Each bolt fired from Shadowthorn carries with it a wisp of shadow, granting the shooter the ability to teleport to where the bolt lands as a bonus action, provided it is within 30 feet and the wielder can see the destination.
Veil of the Dark: As a reaction when attacked, the wielder can activate Shadowthorn's power to cast "Blur" on themselves, once per long rest, making them difficult to hit as they become a formless shade in their attacker’s vision.
Curse of Shadowthorn:
Umbral Hunger: If the crossbow is not used to successfully hit a target within a 24-hour period, the shadow magic within begins to hunger for action, sapping the strength of its wielder. They must make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion as the shadow leeches their vitality.
Echo of the Abyss: After using the Shadowmeld Bolt ability, the wielder’s next attack roll or saving throw is made with Disadvantage, as a piece of their essence remains tethered to the shadows, momentarily disorienting them.
