Description Been reading some Stanchfield lately, especially the chapters about gestures, and hoping that at least something sinks in.

But today I had a completely different revelation ... concerning drawing using ... putty ... instead of lines! Like if I draw the gestures, imagining that I'm forming it with putty, instead of drawing the lines outside, it seems to work better. I'm still using lines. Just ... I'm not focusing on the lines so much, more as a means to an end ... and I'm a lot happier with this batch than the previous one. Then with each subsequent 'go over' ... I try to form it to be more and more solid.

First row 20sec, second row 1min, third row 5min.

I practice Aikido, and we put a lot of emphasis on making our movements as light and fluid as gestures even when throwing people much larger than ourselves. One interesting thing to notice is that when a person is moving naturally, in a coordinated fasion, one glance at their hips and you can tell the position of their hands, and one glance at the hands and you can tell the orientation of their hips. All of the parts move together even in seemingly contorted postures.

These are really inspiring. I hope your exploration rbrings you new insights in your art .

hmmm ... I tend to approach gesture drawing as making a wire armature/skeleton. Then fill in the "clay" volumes. Dancers are great to draw, they've spent years training their spines and limbs to make beautiful lines

Cool idea about the putty thinking!

I'm awful at language but am trying to learn Russian at the mo and I do a similar thing where I try to "feel" the meanings rather than directly relating them to their English counterparts.

It works for most things

Keep up the Devs! Love your work!
