Description
My brain works in strange ways. When I was a kid (about three to five) I was a hardcore astronomy geek. I also had an audio cassette (Yes I grew up in the nineties) of an album called "the Planets". I can't quite remember the artist, but each of the weird electronic/instrumental songs was inspired in a planet, or at least their esoteric "essence". I loved that album, and I used to imagine the wonders of each world while I listened.
Fast forward a few years, when I was about 8 or 9 my dad bought the album "Mutter" by Rammstein, and I saw again the mental pictures of the planets, with the additional benefit that, by that age, I was -sort of- capable of expressing them through drawings. Each song corresponded to a planet, and it took me various repeats of the album to draw them all. I retrospective those drawings are LAME... I still have them somewhere... but at the time, that ability to form and draw mental pictures from what I listened became quite the discovery for me. Succesive albums by Rammstein corresponded so well with what I imagined that it became a sport for me every time a new album appeared in my house. After a few years I did succesively Sehnsucht, Reise Reise and Rosenrot... each spawned like three or four iterations of my mental pictures on the planets, that evolved from simple glyph-like doodles, to semi-mechanical creatures and fantastic spherical aliens inspired in the information I had on the appearence and characteristics of the entities in the solar system, as well as the tone and feel of the songs.
My last iteration on these "spirits" was made almost 10 years ago, and I found it a few month ago while I was skimming trough my old drawings in the attic. I figured that after so much time and all the new things that I've learned since 2005 it would be cool to revisit these concepts and improve them. Last night I did some sketches based this time not in music, but in the physical, astronomical and occult characteristics of the Planets.

05 - JUPITER
· the Dragon ·
Jupiter is fundamentaly the Big Brother of the Solar System, the second largest object and an essential part of things as we know them here on Earth. It's a monster of a planet, the vaccuum cleaner of all things rogue. I visualised its spirit like a sort of high-ranking warrior, a sluggish giant in command of an elite legion. I wasn't sure which archetype corresponded better with what I had in mind, It has some properties of the "warrior" archetypes, but as its namesake, Jupiter/Zeus, it's kind of amoral. I guess it could either be a Champion or a Dragon archetype, but I went with the latter because it implies more beastlyness, which is what defines Jupiter in my mind.
Designwise, my sketch described a bulky, rounded, red gaseous monster, but during the research process I found an awesome photo of Jupiter's Aurora and I knew I had to include some of that in my depiction. The aurora became a crown of flames, and the super magnetic field of the planet translated into a bluish aura and sigil protection on its "shield"
I loved how this one turned out! lots of little things, details and coincidences coming together to make a strong symbollic design... and of course, I've got to make a portrait of Jupiter's "court"... starring the spirits of the Galilean Moons

Very cool ideas you've illustrated well here! Hey... doesn't Jupiter have more than one red eye now? I thought it split up into a few smaller ones?
Still have to get back to your other replies! I'm so behind lol!

Thank you! I'm not aware of the Red Spot splitting, but I do know it's shrinking!! Kind of sad, but also really awesome that we humans got to see it.

Awww... it's not sad... it's changing! That's neat, don't you think?
Yes, we're getting to see it change!
Here, I found this:

Ohhhh haven't heard about that!
Indeed it does appear to have three spots now, or at least during the time when the article was written, recent photos don't look like that anymore
Look at this!: solarsystem.nasa.gov/images/co…

I'm imagining the Great Red Spot as a single great cyclopean eye larger than the earth.
Think of the lines and wrinkles surrounding the eye sockets of an extremely elderly person or a chimpanzee . Mess with the color hue and saturation in photoshop to give them the same coloration as the cloud patterns , then merge them together so it isn't clear where the gnarled skin ends and the stormy gas giant atmosphere begins. The eye itself is human , only with the hue and saturation photoshopped to turn the iris the same red as the actual Jupiter's spot.

I agree with you on the eye biz! it's really hard not to read it that way... I didn't want to add instantly recognizable earthly features to alien planets on this case, but I reckon it would look awesome as well.

I didn't want to add instantly recognizable earthly features to alien planets on this case...Seems reasonable enough to me and I can hardly argue with the quality of the resulting artwork. Besides, there's always Phill-Art's artwork which is also really impressive but in an entirely different manner for people who want more anthropomorphized anthropomorphic personifications of the solar system.
Phill-Art's Sun
Phill-Art's Mercury
Phill-Art's Venus
Phill-Art's Earth
Phill-Art's Mars
Phill-Art's Jupiter

Sounds like you are describing Isao Tomita's version of Holst's compositions. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eLOpB…

Indeed! those were the ones I heard. But I liked the Rammstein associations better! ;D
