The raider was the youngest I'd ever seen come over the Ridgeback, but certainly was no less strong than others of his kind. He seemed to prefer words to actual combat, scathing remarks and vulgar words dripping off his tongue like poison. The many times we clashed however, were nothing short of a true battle of wills, the kicks and charges between us swift and bone-jarring. By the time it was through we both were severely bruised, the raider however had a number of slices in his demon coat, his black-blood darkening the thoroughly night-bound hide. I winced at the stinging from my off hind leg, rivulets of blood trickled down it, the cuts weren't especially deep, but they would need treatment. I offered him two choices as the sound of other guards reached our ears; go back to his forsaken homeland or face death by rested warriors. He choose to flee before my fellow guardsman arrived, relief flooded my body as the others surrounded me, I didn't doubt there were more raiders besides him. Though I am a seasoned guard, I certainly wouldn't want to take on another of the fierce demons in fawnling form.

The scrawny cadet (who always seemed to be at my heels) that was my apprentice, plastered himself against my side once more, wide eyes staring in worry at my swollen eye and bleeding nose. "Does it hurt?" He squeaked. "A little..." I frowned as my rack caught on a branch I could not see. "I bet not as badly as that Blackwood demon must be feeling!" I smiled or tried to anyway, "Certainly I gave him what he had coming!" The stagling puffed his chest out proudly, admiration for my heroic deed overflowing from him, looking for once at my minor injuries with appreciation instead of squirming in his dark buckskin coat, rather he seemed happy that I had apparently won the fight. The search for the herbs he had wanted to bring back to his mother, all but forgotten in the excitement. Once my scrapes had been treated I would take him out once again to look for them, but we wouldn't be going alone next time. For us to run into a Blackwood when I wasn't even on duty, that had been surprising. Clearly they were growing bolder in their endeavors, and we of the guard were hard pressed to keep them at bay, and away from our does and fawns. I sighed as the new Great Oak came within view, and couldn't help but wonder just how much longer us older guards could keep up.well... that certainly rolled off my fingers o3o
