Today's Halloween and since it's one of those times when we like to surround ourselves with creepy movies, games, images and stuff, I wanted to share with you a drawing I made of a character who used to scare me the most when I was kid. It's the Groke (in Polish: Buka) from "The Moomins" animated series. And I know I wasn't the only child terrified by her...

The Groke is a ghostike creature with small, wide-opened eyes and a wide row of small shiny teeth. Her distinguishing feature is that she freezes everything she touches. Now when I look back on it, I know what exactly used to make me scared in her. It's that dead-eyed, cold stare, creepy smile, the fact that her eyes and teeth shone in the darkness and also those disturbing sounds she made...

But despite the fact that she terrifies everyone, she's in fact a very miserable and lonely creature. I read somewhere that the Groke is actually a representation of loneliness and people who seek friendship and love, but because of their inability to accept and express love in the right way, they seem to be cold and scary to other people. You might know what happens next - more loneliness.
