Well, it depends what you mean by easier. There's a special option called the bezier (or path) tool that allows you to sort of plan out lines, then create them from the preset paths.

I can't figure out how to use that one It seems like it would take longer to use than to do free hand

Well I could also try drawing on Paint then coloring on Gimp, since I do line art easier on Paint.
