Here's one adaptation of this: The blade isn't inside the hilt at all, but rather the hilt contains tech that is able to create a sharp blade on demand and it keeps on coming out for as long as the user wishes (or until the hilt runs out of material for the blade). Once the blade stops extending, a portion is also made inside the hilt all the way to the end, making the blade withstand much more stress. The blade can also be taken apart by the tech inside the hilt, making it seem as if the blade retracts.

The benefits of this tech are immense, not only because of it can be carried and concealed more easily, but also because a regular katana edge chips and dulls easily with heavy usage and can even break, but with this tech, you can re-form the blade in a matter of seconds and have it be as sharp and durable as when it was brand new.

You could even make it so that the blade could be shot out of the hilt with high speed if necessary, making it a very dangerous close range weapon as you would have to keep blocking it while not letting the user point the blade towards you, as that would be pretty much the same as being pointed at by a high-powered rifle. Of course, after such shots the material of the blade would run out quite fast and the material cartridge would have to be replaced, but the advantage it would have over other close range weapons would be immense.

If the tech making the blade is advanced enough, the retraction & extension could even be used as a weapon itself - consider someone trying to block a swing of this sword and equipment in your suit would detect this and make the blade retract enough to dodge it, then extend again after passing it and it would seem as if the blade went through the blocking blade. The prefect weapon for an assassin.

People always seem to think "retractable" means something like "takes up no space"

That blade can't fit in that handle. And it probably wouldn't make a very good sword even if it did.

The quality of the artwork itself is decent, though
