Description
Other views:[link]The Corsica class was launched provide a smaller, possibly more numerous counterpart to the Sovereign class.
Designed with more of a scientific/exploration bent, it paralleled that of the Sovereign class, like the Galaxy and Nebula classes of previous years. This allowed for many identical systems to be installed in both classes; this has resulted in significant improvements used on the Corsica class to be used on the Sovereign class, and vice versa.
When compared to the Sovereign class the Corsica has a more compact shape; the engineering hull is integrated directly to the saucer section, a feature which saves some interior volume, materials and construction time.
The main difference came in capability, the addition of a dorsal housing on the rear of the saucer section. This enables the vessel to carry any one of a variety of special equipment pods, like the Nebula class. In fact, the Corsica class has bee referred to as 'the new Nebula class' on many occasions.
Currant pod's include, high capacity sensor pod, weapons pod with extra phasers and torpedo launchers (eight rapid fire torpedo tubes), hospital pod, science pod with extra laboratories and research stations, and the standard equipped 'exploration' pod; which has extra shields, sensors and torpedo launchers, this pod improves the ships main systems in all fields.
The Corsica, with a slight modification, can fit most of the pods designed for the Nebula.
Although the Corsica has about 80% of the capabilities of a Sovereign class vessel in most areas, the pod feature brings that figure up to 95% or more in that specific area. This flexibility has caused some officers to state that the Corsica will actually, when properly equipped, out-perform the Sovereign in most areas. These ships are a perfect replacement for the Nebula Class which has been a important part of Starfleet's exploratory programs.
Corsica design, like the Sovereign class, is due to receive regular upgrades to their systems, most notably a new impulse engine, which should increase the sub-light speed of these ships about 20%, a 40% increase over the Sovereign's speed. Although the Sovereign is due for new warp engines, which should increase it's warp power to a level where it will more than keep up with the Corsica.
