I was inspired to make this after seeing this video:

So, I set about and made my own twist on the animation seen in the video. While I had a bit of trouble animating the entire thing and getting it to loop (and making sure that none of the objects clipped through each other even slightly), I eventually succeeded. I originally wanted to render it in Cycles for more realism, but then I decided to stick with Blender Render for less time consumption.

Then came the hard part: exporting it as an animated GIF. I tried rendering it with the Bligify addon, but the end result always came out slower than it should, even when I set the frame rate in the Bligify tab to 24 fps. So, I eventually resorted to rendering it as an MP4 and converting it to a GIF with this:
