[Notes: It's been a ride, but we finally reached the second milestone set for the Gen 1 variants. So, keeping it simple at #100, we have the infamous exploding Pokéballs. I don't know why but I have a feeling that Gamefreak was going for this when they thought of making a bomb Pokémon, but someone in the crew pointed out it would be a reach to have literal bombs in a game for kids. But since we can do whatever as artists, here it is…
PS: This deviant does not endorse explosives. Bombs are not something to play with.]
.
It is a well known fact that many Pokémon variants found in Alneo are closer to their natural state and hence, the region has been a center of study for researchers since its discovery. However, there also exist Pokémon whose very origins are the results of human intervention and technologies.
.
The Voltorb line was originally created by Kantonese alchemists to be used in full-scale wars. However, the prototype designs used gunpowder and sulphur for production of explosive energies. These earlier Voltorb used to be non-sentient exploding spheres used in cannons, up until the famous Kanto-Sinnoh Canal was established for inter-regional trades and commerce. It is a widely known fact of history how this route caused multiple Pokémon species to adapt to Sinnohan climate and become more powerful.
.
What's lesser known is the impact of this trade route in the creation of Voltorb. If you haven't yet guessed, Kantonese scientists used a certain Sinnohan species of Pokémon to create self-sentient bombs capable of exploding on their own accord under given instructions: a Pokémon created solely for the sake of wars. And thus, the first Voltorb was born.
.
However, after the Kanto-Johto war, the Kantonese government stopped implementing Voltorb as weapons, even going far enough to shut down any and all sentient Voltorb to avoid their intended use. This caused the Voltorb to adapt and achieve an appearance of the recently discovered "Pokéballs", causing the inception of the wide-known Pokeball Voltorb line of Kanto.
.
However, some of the earlier Voltorb somehow crossed the huge oceanic gap and found refuge in the undiscovered region of Alneo, continuing to exploit the thermal properties of gunpowder, forming the exotic lineage of Alnean variants. Being rich in gunpowder, the explosive capacity of these Voltorb are disastrous… a fully grown Alnean Electrode is known to sink a whole ship down with just one explosion.

“A certain Sinnohan Pokemon” I can only assume you’re talking about Rotom

I appreciate the subtle reference to the ultra ball (or hyper ball given the H) in Electrode's design.

It actually serves both ways… H is also the symbol for Hydrogen, the gas used in hydrogen bombs.

Now it's even cooler knowing that!
