This raises a lot of questions about the makeup of Winslow’s body.
I did a minor experiment with the tones for this one. With all my strips, I color in the pure white sections–the skin of Ben, Winslow, and similar characters; eyes; and shiny parts of metal–in the computer. Usually when one of these strips takes place in darkness, I just leave everything dark except for the eyes. With this one, I didn’t want it to be in total darkness, so I did my usual whitening routine and then darkened everything artificially. Then I picked out the light in white to make it brighter than everything else.
I have to be really careful these days about what I put into my comics. My oldest is fascinated by them and even doodles Ben and Winslow at school in various situations. He always wants to read my latest strips, and I hate having to tell him stuff like “Sorry, this one’s a little too grown up for you, kiddo.” He’s a great audience, though, because he will dutifully laugh at whatever I show him, even if the humor goes over his head. He didn’t really get the first two panels of this one, but he definitely understands eating lightbulbs. I count this one as a win.
