Description
"Godzilla; for me was never a representation of nuclear holocaust, or an environmental message, a force of nature or an evil villain. For me Godzilla was a hero, the best kind of hero. Superman, Batman, Spiderman-- they were humans for all intents and purposes. 'Friendly' familiar images saving people and fighting the bad guys. As a tot, I loved dinosaurs, still do, but they were always portrayed as the villains and when they were the heroes of stories, it was always the herbivores(the friendly looking dinos) that took the spotlight. Then came Godzilla, there he was, a heroic dinosaur. Yes he had the sharp teeth and the angry eyes, yet he fought the bad guys. He defended a planet full of creatures that thought of him as a menace. Despite the fact that he looked different, despite the fact that his origins were tragic, despite the fact that he was mistreated, he still fought. Battered and bloodied fighting Gigan or MechaGodzilla, he continued to fight forward. He did not give up. Against all odds, no matter how bad the world was to him, he was still the hero. Its so easy to just give into our primal desires, to hold onto old grudges and hatreds, further our xenophobia and ignorance-- to be twisted and molded into something perverse by our experiences. But for me, the greatest kinds of heroes, are the ones that don't have to be. Godzilla was always more like an action hero to me than a metaphor and that is my right as a fan to look at him like that. Because for every kind of fan, there is a different kind of Godzilla and at the end of the day, its just more fun to watch Godzilla kick the shit out of an army of evil monsters than to watch him step on a couple of tanks and then die at the end of the film a tragic, over-bloated metaphor."
More Showa style Godzilla redesign here. I hope people can understand where I come from when I say stuff like this. I think the message of doing the right thing, despite your experiences, is just as important as the messages that the original Godzilla film portrayed. That is just me, maybe I'm digging deep, but this is just how I feel.
