Description I'm going overseas next Sunday so I'll be away and inactive for almost 2 months. I hope I can finish this drawing before I go..

When I saw Ben Barnes in Prince Caspian role I thought he's hot but since I'm not a fan of the movie I didn't feel like drawing him. I was so thrilled to know he got the leading role in the movie 'The picture of Dorian Gray', one of my fav gothic novels! Thought I always picture Dorian Gray in the book to be a pretty boy with blond hair I don't mind this darker, hotter version of him!

Now to the drawing.. I use this [link] as the ref.

My WIP is always friggin ugly, that's why I've never posted any of them!! I don't know how to finish one part or one section of a drawing at a time. I always start with the whole face and my drawing never look decent until I'm close to the finish line.

However, people keep asking me how do I start my drawing and how I do the shading and it's so hard to explain with words. So there you go..

And don't worry if the drawing look messy at this stage because that's how all of my drawings looked when I started them.

You can take this as my shading tutorial, if you find it useful..that's it..

Any question please feel free to ask.

There's a certain point of realism that you can get to until finally you end up of a grey scale replica of an image that already exists. While I applaud the quality of your work, I can't help but wonder at it's uses; If art gives us an out to express ourselves, why do people draw things with intense precision that have already been expressed by a cinematography crew? I don't know, I just find original artwork a whole lot more useful. Perhaps drawing a new character over a reference model makes more sense for me.

This is a great tutorial but something I find I struggle with would be figuring out if the sketch is all porportioned correctly before shading.

lol, this is pretty much what I do for shading. I tissue paper and sticks. They work miracles! I'm so sorry that you have to post the WIPs to prove that you are drawing these things. Stupid jealous people that don't want you to have any recognition because their lack of talent are to blame! You are a WONDERFUL artist! Hope you have a lovely trip!

Oh this will look so cool! I wonder if you've considered leaving the pen out of it? Besides that it might distract from his face (love that expression... ), it would also be an obvious enough difference from the photo that you (hopefully) wouldn't have to deal with some copyright stupidness from admin.

thank you so much! i'm glad to see your work before blending, because i always thought to follow the contour of ( in this case the face) the object. Now i see yours are all diagonal and at the end it seems also uncredible realistic. it gives me hope
also great to see your dot technique. maybe my scketches would be better and faster now
Hope to see m and learn more of you!
Thanx

I do have a question (a silly one, at that xD): Where do you get blending sticks? I've been trying to find them, but I haven't been able to >.<

akaLilith In reply to padme-naberrie [2009-09-12 15:26:09 +0000 UTC]

I always got them from my local art supplies. I think anywhere that sell drawing or painting tools should have them.
