Description
I miss real spring! This is my part of an art trade with my dear: Her character, Lupe, a Roman patrician’s daughter. A rather rebellious Roman girl I would say!
Drawing horses is so difficult! See her part of the trade here: She drew my character, Morholt, the bard-turned-mercenary.

That horse looks lovely! As well as the girl on top! And the colors are sooo nice and spring-y! My sister has been into horse-riding since she was really litle and when saw your painting (she was sitting next to me) she went all "aww! I wanna go take my horse for a riding now"
And omg i agree on the real spring part! We're wearing sweaters and fat socks one day and the next we walk around in shorts and sleeveless t-shirts! What's up with that? D:

Ah, there's so much sun in this picture... Maybe it's the winter weather outside, but i feel such warmth radiating from this piece. Normally i'm a fan of muted colours, but your choice of summer hues appeals to me.
And the horse looks very benevolent (quite unlike the foul beast i had to ride a few times back when i tried to acquire this skill)

I'm so glad it feels warm to you! I was so sick of winter when I was drawing this - I really wanted to go for something sunny and warm. I also prefer more muted colours, but somehow I really needed this.
I think the horse looks too benevolent actually! It's eyes scared me a bit when I finished, they looked too human...

Very pretty. The colors you used for the girl, imo, make her stand out more and draw your focus to she and the horse (which you also did a good job on). Very sweet portrait

The warmth of the colours here is great...it is just, well... heartwarming! I really like her pose and expression. The way you have painted flowers and leaves is very good too, as in your other paintings

This is beautiful! I love the bright yellow, green and blue tones, it all speaks of new life and fresh starts. The horse is beautifully drawn and I love the way her hair falls over it's mane! The fields in the background are really pretty and I really adore the snowdrops, they're very delicate!

This is a nice balance between stylization and strict realism. Nice flow with the lines of hair, mane; I think the girl's expression chimes nicely with the horse's . You are doing well with horses- it would be really carping to insist on more anatomical detail, since what you have is quite correct- you seem to know, for instance, where the tack goes .towards the ear. Yes, we are all getting impatient for spring!

I was trying to go for a slightly more realistic style than usual (definitely no where near realism though) so I'm glad that worked out to some degree. The tack - well I know how modern-day tack works, but I'm not sure what models they would have used in the 1st century - must have been similar though, right?

That's an interesting question, I really have no idea. I know that harness in the American West was originally very basic- something called a hackamore, really just a length of rope, and the use of bits, and so forth varies widely. The Plains Indians reputedly rode bareback,holding onto a lead rein or even the horses mane. I remember hearing once that it was some time before some genius figured out a way to harness horses for pulling ,but surely chariots and such must have had pretty sophisticated equipage..

This is lovely! The colours really set the mood and her pose is so relaxed and natural. I like all the curving lines too, the flowers are very art nouveau :)
