I've wanted to do something like this for a long while, but the real spark to action didn't come until I saw this character design for the upcoming Nintendo DS game 'Another Code'. She struck me as being very appealing, but in a way that is very down to earth. She isn't very sexual or overly cute, but is one of the rare anime-style characters that looks like she could live in the real world (white hair and all). I thought the t-shirt design was really cool too, and that impression is probably what set me on this project to create a digital dessup doll for her.

Starting with the original art, I drew over it using Flash vectors, creating a basic body template (easter egg hint), and then drawing each bit of clothing as a movie clip. Because of her baggy jeans, I had to draw the lower half of her body more or less from scratch. Creating the skirt and long sleeve top were very easy, but the shoes turned into a huge challenge (yes, they look very chunky, but I like to put that down to Japanese raver-style). Some of the action script used turned out to be an interesting challenge. I wanted to give her some blinking eyes, so she looked a little more alive, but in the way that the clothing movie clips are handled to allow the various color and style changes, I couldn't get the eyes to run as a usual movie clip. I ended up creating a timer variable specifially for the eye blink, and that solved that.

There is a sense that these things are actually a lot more fun to make than for other people to play around with. The clothing options here are still pretty basic, but I still find to be a strangely interesting diversion (some combinations look brilliant, others are truely horrible).

I will definitely be updating this Digital Doll when the game is officially released, and people will actually recognize where this character is from. There is virtually no limit to what can be added, and I especially want to try a few full length dresses of some description. I'm sure there are plenty of ideas out there that can be tried and applied.
