When this game released the real picture of new NK tank wasn't shown up until the parade in 2010, so they make a tank looks likes ZTZ-99A2 or ZTZ-96A1 (I highly doubt if China sell these advanced tank for NK during the invasion, but for the MBT-2000 that's still possible). The newest NK tank named Pokpung-ho, however it's still not in line with the design like Chinese one did: [link]

The tank in game is a very striking type 99 tank

Look closer, the tank in the game is lacking of anti-optics as well as the laser designator at the turret. I'm sure that's not the Type-99, but the MBT-2000 (It also allowed to upgrade into better armored variant shaped like the 96A1 or 99A2).

Right although that could be due to the fact they were exported

Type-98 is not too productive as well as Type-99 since the PLA take the decision of the upgraded version of Type-96. It can provide better armoring and also shape up the design as close as the Type-99, yet with a lot more cheaper price since it doesn't require a heavy-duty engine and anti-optical device.

What's with the tracks? Is this the cheaper model of the Type99

no, this is not a cheaper variant of the Type 99 Chinese Tank, this was the Chinese' copy of the Soviet's T-54 Main Battle Tank.

excuse me, are you mean Type 59? Cos' the Type 98 and 99 are influence by Israeli, Western and T72 design feature

Is it in a lowered position, or why are the tracks that loose from both ends?

Yup. See [link]
It's also in "Modern Tanks" and other books. Western countries supply China with a LOT of stuff, which the Chinese then build under licence...
