I was reminded of a comedy sketch I saw a shortly after TNG first aired in the UK. The crew put the brakes on suddenly, only to have the saucer section keep on going whilst the rest of the ship stopped. I can't remember what the other characters said, but the first officer said something along the the lines of "this could either be a flaw, or one way of testing the saucer seperation!"
