Description
IJA Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa chased by a USAF Curtiss P-40. A tangle that the American fighter should NEVER take under NO circumstances, knowing how nimble Japanese WWII fighters used to be.The confrontations between these two planes were very common over China in 1942-45, and statistics have it that the P-40 would beat the Hayabusa (Japanese for "peregrine falcon") in a 2-1 ratio; occasionally even 3-1 (2 and even 3 Hayabusas down for every P-40 down).
The P-40 was safer and way more robust and resistant than the Ki-43, more streamlined, with a way more powerful engine, somehow faster, more reliable... but no way that nimble (in spite of the fact that it was amongst the most nimble allied fighters).
Pilots said that in dogfights against Japanese fighters, the P-40 handled almost like a truck

Nice drawing, I've always liked this 'Not quite front' view.
Something I've always found interesting about the Ki43 was that it was competitive right up until the end of the war, in fact the second highest scoring US ace Thomas McGuire was killed trying to turn fight a Ki43 at low level in a P38, the only real downsides with the Ki43 was the lack of armor and light armament.

The Ki-43 might have remained competitive in dogfights, but when it comes to the "hit-and-run" tactic... Trying to tangle against a Hayabusa, or a Zero, was the worst mistake that any ally pilot could make, so in spite of how "humble" the Hayabusa was by the end of the war, and her poor armament, I am not surprised about Thomas McGuire been shot down.
And the poor engine power (deriving into insufficient speed, among others) was yet another setback against the Hayabusa.

Except for the printing spoiling the view, that's an okay illustration.

Better than leaving it naked against possible art-theft...
