Description
A tutorial for how I, personally, edit the MSPA sprites. It should be fairly accessible for anyone with at least basic knowledge of Photoshop. (It was made using CS5, but I don't think I used anything that wasn't around for PS7, at the least.)There are some typos, bluh. If anyone cares, I can edit them out, but I'm too lazy otherwise. (I am not too lazy to answer questions, though!)
You can get sprite sheets of almost everything here .

I know of a couple!
firealpaca.com/en
www.gimp.org/
Both of these run on both mac and windows, theoretically. I've never really used them, but I know Gimp is pretty popular, and people were pretty excited about FireAlpaca when it first came out.

Will photoshop files work on them?

I have no idea! That would be a question to pose to someone who actually uses them. :b Or something to test out for yourself, since they are free programs...

I have gimp and I have no idea how to work it. I made my OC in Ms Paint with a sprite sheet and I wanted to edit it with gimp. But I can't figure out how to use it!

I can't get the magic wand tool to work :I I use the lasso tool and select the body I want, then select the magic wand, but when I click it selects everything in the whole base! Am I doing something wrong??

I'm... not quite sure what you're saying, but here are some things you should check?
1. Are you using the subtraction magic wand? Hold the alt key while using the wand, there should be a little - next to it.
2. Is the "contiguous" box checked or unchecked? If it's checked, it will only select in the area around it. If it's unchecked, it will select everything in the color range throughout the whole image.
3. What's the range at? It should be a low number, or 0; if it's 225, it will literally select everything.
I hope that helps! If not, it may be something else, or a software problem.

Quick question...what version of Photoshop are you using? I have 5 and I'm not seeing magic wand or paint bucket anywhere <:/

I'm using CS5! I've never used anything earlier than 6.0, but they should still be there, I think... :\

I always love when I hear how people put thought into making their art. c:
Your ridiculously long lecture was a pleasure to read.
But seeing all this lassolassolasso tool makes me really think that Photoshop needs an aliased brush because wow.

It does! The pencil brush. But I find lasso infinitely easier to control, personally, and think that it makes much smoother lines for flood-filling.

Well I meant other than the super thin pencil brush. I guess I'm just too used to Paint.net, where you can just turn the anti-aliasing on and off on any given brush. I'd miss that so much if I ever use Photoshop.

AlanaHikariChan In reply to draconian73 [2011-03-01 01:38:06 +0000 UTC]
But... you can? XD;; I mean, you have to switch to the pencil tool and select the brush you want, you can't just turn the anti-aliasing off, but Photoshop does that!

Huh, cool! I was planning on doing this, and this will definitely give me some useful pointers. I've done "sprite" edits before, but more on the order of Pokemon sprites than HS ones, so yeah this is awesome.
Thanks for making it! <3

Just to note, I (have to) use PS 5.5 and there isn't anything missing from my version to do this.

I didn't think there would be! Most of the differences between PS7 (the oldest version I'm familiar with) and CS5 are much, much more complex options and filters and stuff. XD
But thanks for the confirmation <3
