The Japanese name, "闘虫仮装" (tochu-kasou) is a pun of "冬虫夏草" (touchuu-kasou).
"冬虫夏草" (literary tranlsated to "winter-insect, summer-grass"), known in English as a "vegetable caterpillar" (Cordyceps sinensis), is a species of fungus that grows on certain species of insects. The spores of the fungus lie dormant inside the insect during the winter, then spring to life in the summer, hence its name.
