Do you think it's a hawk or some other bird of prey though?

Any idea what type? Most seem to think it's a hawk.

I am not that good on birds of preys, especially not the english names and which types live in America, but to me it does look like a hawk or buzzard of some kind and (of course) not an eagle or so A falcon could also be, but I think falcons are even smaller or have thinner wings and tails and most often a different coloring.

You think?
I really don't know a lot about birds, so I'm pretty clueless when it comes to guessing them! Hopefully mum will bring them another bird back when I have a new camera!

Going by the size, yellow legs and claws and the barred tail, probably an immature one but thats what it looks like to me..
Fingers crossed indeed .

I would agree with you on the sparrow hawk, that would be my guess. It's not uncommon for them to be around gardens too

His mum got it, and he stole it and tried to drag it back to the den The other cubs appeared and helped him in the end

Nice how did she catch a bird of prey?? I reckon it's a little small for a buzzard though it could be a juvenile...

I've no idea! We don't see any birds of prey near our house either, so weird to suddenly see a fox carrying a dead one! Maybe it was injured so was on the floor or something?

ERB20 In reply to Alannah-Hawker [2011-04-24 01:09:37 +0000 UTC]
Odd :s could it be a sparrow hawk? They sometimes come into gardens etc. We don't get many birds of prey in my town but I have seen a sparrow hawk now and again (plus a merlin which was VERY weird). Probably injured, a fox would have a bit of a job to take one out

I'm not sure, the only birds we get in the garden are pigeons, the odd crow, robin, and other tiny little birds I don't know the names of lol.
Then again mum goes out for the entire day and comes back with food at like 7pm. So she could be going quite far away to get the food, who knows.. Either way, looks like she's a good hunter!!

I would guess Sparrow Hawk like *quaddie , she could be foraging far from home. Still impressive she came back with that though!!

I think that's a common buzzard (Buteo buteo).
That the shutter broke is sad, the photo would have been so cute. Baby fox with giant prey.

It would have been... Typical though hey? Hopefully mum will bring them something else back, she's an amazing fox, I wouldn't be surprised if she did get them something else big like this. Today they had a small bird and mum bought them something else back. They also had something yesterday (I got a quick snap of mum with it, not very good though) but I couldn't make out what it was Maybe I'll add it to scraps and see if anyone knows

Judging by the talons and feather markings... a juvenile bird of prey maybe? What can be seen in this photo looks somewhat similar in comparison to this: [link]
But also, could also be poultry or wildfowl. And sorry to hear about your camera D:

GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
*dies*
Is it expensive to fix or is it cheaper to just get a whole new camera?
Do you know how it broke? I know I'm a finger clicker whore, and my dad keeps saying I'm going to break mine that way.
And if you do get it fixed, how long?
Too many questions, I know.

Alannah-Hawker In reply to TwistedHearts [2011-04-21 10:14:24 +0000 UTC]
my journal pretty much explains what happened.
It would need a whole new shutter to be installed.... which would cost maybe £200+
It's not worth it considering I was thinking of upgrading sometime soon anyway, it would just be a waste. May as well just update early.
my poor little 450... RIP.

. So which one are you going to get now?
RIP 450!

Apparently the shutters ware out after so many clicks.. So yep, serves me right for over using lol.
I got a 7D, cost me every penny I have and more. I need another memory card for it though (it only holds 200pics on an 8gb card!!)

TwistedHearts In reply to Alannah-Hawker [2011-04-25 03:26:20 +0000 UTC]
...................................... OH NO! I click so much too.... Mine will die too?
Probably will with the way I use it... which means my dad was right about my constant clicking.
I guess the 200 pics will make sure you limit how much clicking you do?

Alannah-Hawker In reply to TwistedHearts [2011-04-27 00:23:41 +0000 UTC]
I dunno? Mine has had 3years of over use so that's probably why mine died
No, just means I must find more money to buy a bigger memory card lol
