I use just a little smudge. Usually when drawing fur, to smoothen out the scribbled stuff, and that's it. Oh, sometimes I use it for blending the shading, since blur doesn't work good for me.

I agree with this and your dodge and burn stamp. I draw pixelated images in MS Paint, and I don't anti-alias, mostly due to laziness. In any case, I downloaded a photoshop trial and tried to use those tools to smooth out my pixelation, and it totally looked like shit. I was better off leaving it the way it was! Those tools suck.

I use the different kinds of brush tools, hardly ever use the smudge tool unless I'm feeling lazy, lol which is usually when I'm using guidelines (like line art)

I only use smudge when making metallic surfaces, but I am guilty of burn and dodge rapism (which isn't a word, apparently)

When used properly these tools can have some nice effects, but way too many people rely on them exclusively for shading or rendering fur without realizing how tacky it makes the final result look.

So how do you know if when using the burn and dodge tool it just doesn't work?

Basically you've used it too much when your shadows and highlights look "unnatural". If you're not certain try either asking for critiques or looking up some shading tutorials, there are some good ones here on DA that don't use the dodge/burn tool at all that I would recommend.

I do dislike it when people blur for any reason but blending colors. If the lines aren't crisp, I think it takes away from the artwork.

I commented on their "updated" tutorial a while back- politely, even! They flipped a shit and hid the comments, heh. I'm pretty sure all I told them was that there are better, more professional ways of rendering fur.
Nothing screams "I DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE PHOTOSHOP" like excessive dodge/burn/smudge tool use, followed closely by the lense flare and the grass brush.
