This freaked me out too! I showed this photo to a few friends to see their reactions and they all acted like it was ok and no big deal. When I asked why, they said the exact same thing elvenpath030 did. I can only assume that many mothers separately stating the same thing means it is true.

Actually, babies all have a 'diving reflex' up until they're 6 months old, which basically means they don't let water get into their lungs as they're submerged. That reflex is usually lost when they reach a certain age, but can be kept with exercises, exposing the baby to water etc. It's most certainly not fake.

I don't understand you, frankly. I don't have a baby of my own yet, nor have I tried to submerge a baby underwater, but it is a fact that a baby younger than 6 months won't drown if it stays underwater for a few seconds, because it has a reflex that remained from the time spent in the uterus. Besides, I'm sure the photographer and the child's mother knew what they were doing.

how old are you again? .. aaaah .. ok .. listen, if you corner a cat it becomes a vicious beast .. it's called survival instinct .. it's a perfect system created by nature yes, but a mother doing stuff like that espiecially for fame of pictures - clearly proves lack of imagination and irresponsibility.

Not offended by that age comment of yours at all, you're not the first or the last to make assumptions and judgements based on how old I am. You have your opinion, I have mine. We'll just keep it at that.

I was just wondering, is it that she swims so often that she knows to hold her breath? I just wouldn't want her to get in there and then try to breathe.

She's the most natural water baby I've ever seen and still I am hesitant. But I've never seen her so much as sputter. So I'll photograph her doing anything her mother has already taught her. Babies who like to splash and blow bubbles in the bathtub learn very quickly not to inhale water ...
