I must admit Ive been less inclined to sort through "Deviation stacks" to see individual images in my watch list but Im so glad I saw this. It's absolutely beautiful and full of wonder. Im very aware as a child development professional that children can do things like this underwater- but it still blows my mind whenever I see it.

This has to be one of the most amazing photos I have ever seen! The clarity, the expression on the babies face -- absolutely priceless!

It's been forever since you're last deviation. Instant fav in my book. Such tenderness and amazement in both of their expressions.

I pulled my son, still in diapers, off the bottom of a pool once. Thirty years later he can swim just fine, but his children are afraid of the water ... somehow he's unconsciously passed on his hesitance.
This child has been training for months, almost since she was born. (Her mother would say even before considering how many pictures I took of her pregnant.)
Please don't think you can take an untrained infant into the water and rely on her instincts to prevent her from sucking a lungfull of water. A momentary miscalculation could put your child in the hospital.
Yet drownproofing a toddler is critical if you live near any body of water, even a small creek. But take your time and do it right!
Thanks for bringing it up - I should have said all this when I posted it.

How do you train an infant for holding their breath underwater? Do you just put them under for a short time, then a little longer etc.?

By report, one starts by playing supervised bubble blowing games in the bathtub. Once the child has a well-established reflex to hold her breath when she splashes, you just have to make sure your trigger it before dropping down with her. A child who loves to forcefully splash will develop it on her own. We have lots of pictures where the mother was holding her in the water and we didn't realize that her face was under (since she didn't strangle or otherwise abreact) until we were going through the pictures. She mostly just thinks its wonderfully funny, so acclimated has she become.

Tou could always change your "Artist's Comments" to include something like "This child has been training for months. Please don't think you can take an untrained infant into the water and rely on her instincts to prevent her from sucking a lungfull of water. A momentary miscalculation could put your child in the hospital."

very welcome. I do know how that is. My dad had to pull me off the bottom of my grandmothers pool when I was about 10 months old. Crawled out the doggie door is what I'm told. But I still remember my dad telling me that I had the biggest smile on my face when he got me. Even told me that I tried to go back in. But my son is the same way from the day he was born. Didnt like the water or getting his ears wet. I dont know where he gets it from cause both my Ex and I are water babies. I love the water, thats why I moved from las vegas, nv to portland, or.
I also know that all it takes is 1/2 a inch of water to drownd a child or anyone. And water proffing a child is very important thing to do cause it teachs them how to float on their backs of they doo fall in to a pool untill they are found.
But I can say that my daughter is just like me when it comes to the water. Cant get her out of the tub even when its empty.
