Albertonykus — Santa Claws

Description I've seen several images of tyrannosaurids or dromaeosaurids playing Santa that get nicknamed "Santa Claws", but no therizinosaurs yet. Which is strange, because if any type of dinosaur gives off a Santa vibe and deserves the nickname "Santa Claws", it's a therizinosaur.

In the foreground we also have Rudolph the Red-Nosed Hadrosaur, and several small deinonychosaur employees helping to load the sleigh with presents.

So the Santa is a Northronychus, the Reindeer is a Ugrunaaluk, but I don't know what the Deinonychosaurs are supposed to be.

I didn't intend them to be known taxa for most part, but I probably had something like Hesperonychus in mind.

Does Santa Claws give papers as presents? I found a bunch of old mammal papers this Christmas & Olson's review of fossil birds last Christmas.

Nice Chrismas dinosaur-style. I'm glad how your other dinosaur special and I have some other character drawings for this christmas.

This would go well with Justin Tweet's suggestion that dinosaurs described around November or December are our "Christmas gifts" (no new deinonychosaurs, so I'll take Bonapartenykus!).

That's a nice concept. Bonapartenykus was a welcome Christmas present.

On second thought, I'll trade you Bonapartenykus for Veterupristisaurus; fair trade?

I can somewhat understand dromaeosaurs, but I don't get why people would use tyrannosaurs since they are more famous for their bite.

Probably just because they're famous.

I guess I forgot that it isn't just dino-nerds who draw dinosaurs.

"Which is strange, because if any type of dinosaur gives off a Santa vibe and deserves the nickname "Santa Claws", it's a therizinosaur."

I concur, given that (like Santa) said dino had a belly that shook like a bowl full of jelly. I also like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Hadrosaur", given the analogous role of hadrosaurs to antelope (See "What animals alive today would be most like Leonardo?": [link] ), which are closely related to deer. However, I think compys would've made better elves than deinonychosaurs, partly b/c JP's compys remind me of the minions from "Despicable Me" ( [link] ).

That was essentially what I was thinking when I chose the therizinosaur and hadrosaur. I used deinonychosaurs probably because I had Late Cretaceous fauna on my mind when I drew this.

Do these represent any specific genera?

Albertonykus In reply to SpongeBobFossilPants [2011-12-25 01:57:55 +0000 UTC]

No, they're just generic dinosaurs. The hadrosaur is based partly on Edmontosaurus though.
