Description Everything that has happened in OTL to Maria I happened, right up to the death of her spouse/uncle, Peter III of Portugal. (Yep. The Habsburgs weren't the only ones doing inbreeding.) Anyways, Peter III dies in 1779, instead of 1786. Maria is in mourning for a period of time, then she is introduced to Simon Alexander Habsburg, grandson to Emperor Felipe I of Mexico. At the time of their meeting, they were separated by a four year age gap, her 44 (45 in December) and he was 41, yet she grew to take a great fondness with Felipe.

In November that year, the two formally get married in a state ceremony. The next year, Simon found himself becoming King of Portugal by right of his wife, or Jure Uxoris. He proved to be an able and adapt Co-Ruler to Maria. She found happiness and hope in the future after the loss of Peter III. Her three children grew close and respectful to their stepfather. In 1781, their first child was born, Afonso Xavier Ruiz Braganza, their miracle. Maria grew instantly attached to her son, seeing as how he was their miracle given her age at the time. She would go on to have three more children, a son and two daughters, the last child being born on her fifty-fourth birthday, naming her Estela.

She also went to the SFR Yugoslavia, one of only two monarchs in Europe to enter the illusive nation, coming back mentally sharper and stronger. She also would improve her family relations, and improve the Portuguese Empire, putting particular focus on Brazil, slowly laying the ground work for it to become a strong Kingdom, with some historians believing it to be the first steps towards Brazilian Independence decades later. At the outbreak of the Napoleonic Wars, and later the Invasion of Portugal, the Royal Court fled to Brazil.

There, in 1815, Maria became Queen of Brazil, with Simon becoming King of Brazil as well. This complicated many things, with her son, the future John V of Portugal, having to serve as representative for his mother in Lisbon. Things got even more complicated in 1816 when Simon ascended to the throne and became Simon I of Mexico, and Maria suddenly found herself becoming Empress/Co-Ruler of the Mexican Empire through lure mariti, or Latin for 'By right of her husband', which meant she was now a Queen and Empress, the strain of ruling three nations was a lot.

Despite this, she was able to enjoy ruling all three nations, working to the very end to make sure that her subjects were happy and comfortable. On December 20th, 1820, after five years as Queen of Brazil and Empress of Mexico, and after a reign of forty-three years, the longest in Portuguese history at the time, and just three days after her eight-sixth birthday, Maria I died in Brazil from natural causes, her family by her side. She initially buried in the Pantheon of the Braganza's in Portugal, but then a couple of years later, her remains were moved to Mexico to lay next to her spouse.
