Description
Photo 1 of 5, so there is more to come I've scheduled DA to upload one each day.I volunteer at a local aviation museum and was super excited to have the opportunity to participate in a Night at the Museum themed event. (If you've never seen the Ben Stiller movie, it's about a museum with exhibits that come to life after hours.) I opted to portray a member of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (known as the WASPs) and teach children all about the United States' female pilots during WWII.
This is a costume, not a reenactment uniform. It is not historically accurate. I opted to add the patches and insignia to distinguish myself from all the other green flightsuits out there (which all look the same in the eyes of a 6-year-old!) as well as a show-and-tell type tool.
The coveralls are an authentic period flightsuit. The belt was a quick improvisation because the suit arrived without the original. Several buttons were missing and had to be replaced as well.
The Army Air Corps patch is a period piece as well. It would have been worn on the right shoulder of the battle or service dress.
The 318th AAFFTD patch would have been displayed on the left breast of the leather flying jackets. It features Fifinella, a cute little gremlin created by Roald Dahl. The patch was designed by Disney Studios... and maybe even Walt Disney himself!
The WAPS "wings" insignia (worn on both battle and service dress) could only be earned by completing 23-week training course- the same as male aviation cadets- during which time they were trained the same way as everyone else. The criteria to be accepted as a WASP, however, was much higher than that of their male counterparts and of the over 25,000 women who applied for the program, only the top 1,900 were ever accepted.
As far as shoes go, WASPs usually wore oxfords or flying boots... I have neither, so I opted for some combat boots.
I have no idea about the hat.... It was on lend from Archives.
