Version 1

A more dynamic pose than the first version.

For version 1, I originally drew it a thumbnail of it in a small sketchbook and thought that I liked that a lot. It wasn't till I was done, when I thought it looked kinda flat -- which pretty much defeats the purpose of drawing a thumbnail and choosing a thumbnail of a drawing that you like best. I'm still working on that.

It was very portrait-like, but I wanted to do something in the vein of the photographs taken in season 2 when Youko, Erika, and Sei graduated -- which is why I think I liked the idea.

I wanted to try a second one (and see if could do it quicker) and this is the result. I do like the pose better. I tilted their heads towards one another, and they're at 3/4 view. The shoulders and hips are tilted. If you were to draw a line for each girl's shoulders and hips they would intersect somewhere in the middle. I thought that would make it more intimate and close, since Sachiko and Yumi are quite close in the show.

Both images were inked using Manga Studio 4 -- the curve tool is really quite nice. The colors were done in Photoshop. Each piece is probably 7-8 hours. I watched a lot of Star Trek: Enterprise while I worked on these drawings -- I hadn't watched much of season 4 when it was on TV, yeah, like back in 2005. Has it been that long? Of course, if I remember, the anime Maria-sama ga Miteru hadn't started until 2004, was it? I didn't discover that one till 2009.
