Description
Just a little fun meme.ΒWith the Steam Deck coming up, I made a little retrospective of most of the handheld consoles and how most of them, if not all of them, failed to defeat Nintendo in the portable field.
First we have the Game Gear of SEGA to compete against the Game Boy. It had a screen that could actually display color and light, something that the Game Boy couldn't. Unfortunately, it was heavier compared to the Game Boy, its battery life is very short even with six AA batteries and its game library was short with inconsistent quality.
Next we have the Neo Geo Pocket, a console similar to the Game Boy Color. It had some of the most underrated and obscured fighting games that were decent 8-bit renditions of their popular Neo Geo fighting games. Unfortunately, its game library was severly lacking.
Enter the new millenium, the N-Cage of Nokia was released as both a phone AND a gaming device. Sadly... It was poorly design and its game library isn't competition for the Game Boy Advance. Not to mention some of the games were poor ports like Tomb Raider.
Sony decided to enter the portable gaming with the PSP. It was technically superior to the Nintendo DS and it has some pretty awesome games. Not to mention, it could play movies with UMDs. Unfortunately... The loading screens were abysmal and it had poor battery life.
Sony tried again with the PSPVita, they thought it would defeat the Nintendo 3DS (since it had a rough start) since it was more powerful than a PS2 and even a PS3. Unfortunately, its game library was very small, some of these games were ported to the PS4 and you can only use SD memory cards exclusively for that console, which were very expensive and don't offer much memory storage compared to the regular ones who were cheaper.
Now it's the Steam Deck's turn, which promises to play Steam games on the go and it's technically more powerful than the Nintendo Switch. But... Could the Nintendo Switch still be the better option?
Also, I think the reason why all Nintendo handheld games were successful were thanks to PokΓ©mon.
