Stunning use of colour and light. Immediately the line-y textures and intriguing colour scheme appears very engaging; the landscape appears quite distorted with rather dull yet conflicting colours.
A very curious scene is depicted with the wide amount of dynamic in the vertical structure; the way the light and scene seems to shift as the image progresses is quite captivating.
The light also very nicely provides a high contrast to the land forms; the sharp gleams of light that strike the shapes convey a very succinct feel to their forms.
The contrast seen around the perimeter of the figure is also quite striking, as the dark colours used with the character are made quite imminent, particularly when set in context with the very bright cyan. This really draws out the figure amidst the rest of the image and creates a very distinct focal point.
Combined with the use of colour, this sense of impact and attention is heightened significantly; the bright yellows and reds seen in the cube are the only real vibrant colours in the image, again reinforcing that focus.
Yet, I feel like these warm tones are contrasted heavily by the deep blues, murky browns and dark greys; these lesser colours convey quite the sombre, drab atmosphere to the piece, and the loose, drooping form of the landscape reinforces this feeling of melancholy.
I feel like this expression of colour and form works really well with the subject matter of the piece, as the build of the figure heavily implies some sort of slavery-like situation is going on. In fact, I feel like the form of the landscape really supports this; initially the shapes to the right appear like mountains or walls, perhaps, but instead they seem to be these oozing, abstract pieces of strange, muscle tissue-like material.
This very queer use of form combined with the light appears quite striking; it's as if the spaces caught between each shape are like pockets of darkness.
I can't really pin it down, but the landform appears kind of hollow, and this ominous sense of darkness conveyed with how suddenly the light is cut out perhaps implies more mysterious, alien-like things are inside or around the landscape.
It just seems so strange and even more so with the use of blue, which is very peculiar particularly in an element which appears to be the background. Seemingly having that level of vibrancy and brightness when the light source has already faded is really quite strange, and conveys the impression that the landscape itself may be glowing.
The alien atmosphere is very, very imminent with the unrecognisable forms.
However, I do feel like the texture of this image is what really tops it off in terms of intrigue. As mentioned at the start, the feel of the image appears very line-y - like wires or threads that bind together to create form.
In fact, I feel like the figure and the cube themselves are completely made out of something like muscle tissue with how expressive their forms of line are. Needless to say, this is rather disturbing, as if the character has no skin, just this tissue-like material.
This effect is also seen in the landscape, particularly with the way the shapes seem to thin out into these long, vertical stalks. I'm really not sure what that might be, but the fact that it's made of the same material as the figure implies that the scene maybe alive as well - as if these muscle tissues make up both character and landscape.
This is supported by the previously mentioned colour scheme with the way the material seem to glow a bit without any other light source influencing it.
This sense of life given to the material is very creepy, especially with the bits of thread that spurt out of the figure's head; like, that's the same material he's made out of, that's the same material everything is made out of. It's like us spurting out our muscle tissue, or veins; what the hell? Extremely captivating. The fact that the figure is spurting out anything, particularly with his seemingly starved look, is creepy enough in itself.
Again, I can't stress how strange this scene appears. The weird colours, dark, sombre atmosphere, abrupt lighting and of course the strange consistency of the material really strongly conveys the sense that the entire scene is alive in some sort of alien way.
Yet, you combine that with the very regular-looking form of the cube and you have that contrast between something so weird and something seemingly so regular.
Very intriguing, highly original and extremely profound. Put into context, I feel like the parallel of this scene in our world would be perhaps seeing everything made out of veins - using something so distinctly belonging to life and having it also make up non-living things is extremely creepy.
I'm still totally confused at this, but I love the brilliance of the concept and how you've really executed the feeling of alien life in every object, and, disregarding the strangeness of it all, it's very nicely composed with a strong sense of atmosphere.
