Description
Life goes on “the accident” part IISurgery to fuse and stabilize Kameron’s cervical spine lasted six hours, and they were very fragile moments. Kameron was really weak and sick, with two broken hips, a broken neck, open fractured tibia and some facial trauma; he was in for the long haul. His fiancé had been called after Kameron was already in surgery, and she called his parents. They were all at the hospital within thirty minutes, but weren’t able to see him. Kameron didn’t get moved to recovery until late that afternoon roughly 6pm.
He was still completely unconscious, resting easy in an induced coma. His neck was secured by the fusion and the bulky halo brace encircling his head and chest. He still bore a Miami j collar, despite having the halo. It was just extra precaution, something they’d keep him in for a little while. It wasn’t looking likely that Anna or his parents would be able to see him today, as the SICU visiting hours were about to close for the night.
Given his critical condition, they’d be even more strict with Kameron’s visitors. It still wasn’t known yet, what kind of outcome the young man would have. Would he even wake up? Would he be with them mentally, or was there sustained brain damage? Would he walk, talk or breathe on his own again? So many questions that nobody could answer, leaving Anna pacing the family waiting room.
She glanced around, seeing other families in similar positions. One family in particular, had been told just ten minutes ago that their son had passed away. It pulled at her heart, and made her even more leery of that door opening. She dreaded the news, she knew the wreck was bad and she was terrified. It was a further forty-two minutes, until a doctor finally appeared.
“I’m looking for Kameron’s family.” He spoke aloud, Anna walked over his parents standing and following behind. “That’s us, is—is he okay?” Anna asked frantically, her voice trembling and tears brimming her eyes. The doctor gave a gentle smile, “he’s stable for now, but he’s in an induced coma. He’ll probably be that way for a while, his body needs to rest and recover.” He began, flipping through the clipboard with the Jäger boys information on it.
“I do apologize that you haven’t had any information given,” he continued, clearing his throat. “Kameron sustained some pretty serious injuries, including a broken neck at his c-1 and c-3. He also suffered an open fracture to his left tibia, as well as two broken hips. We performed surgery on his neck to stabilize it, but he will need to undergo at least two more major operations on his hips and leg.” The doctor spoke, letting the family have the major details of their son and fiancé.
Anna’s mouth fell open, her hand shakily reaching up to cover it. That’s when the tears started rolling, and she was helpless to stop them. Kameron’s mother dropped to her knees, hysterical and all but inconsolable. This was devastating news to hear, it was hard to process. While Kameron was still alive, he’d endured major, life threatening injuries.
“I-is he paralyzed?” Anna finally squeaked out, almost afraid of the answer. The looming figure clenched his jaw for a second, thinking briefly. “I can’t say for sure, but it’s very likely he will be.” He said as gently as possible, but that was hard to do. Anna gasped, “oh God...” she muttered, sitting down in the chair beside her. Tears rolled down her face, but her eyes stared blankly at the floor.
She was trying to process what she’d just heard, that her fiancé had some serious injuries and might be paralyzed. It was a shock to the system, and she was worried about him. It was even more distressing that she couldn’t see him, Kameron still wasn’t even in a regular ICU room, he was in surgical ICU.
It was still unknown how long he’d remain in the SICU, and they only allowed visitors to come in for a few minutes once a day. The small woman breathed heavily, wiping her eyes and looking up finally. It took her a while to actually gain her composure, and even then it was muted at best. There was an awful nausea in the pit of her stomach, but she knew it was from how worked up she’d been. It was going to be a terribly long night, she was going to need some supplies to survive it.
Standing up, Anna grabbed her small purse. “Levi, Farrah, can I get you anything from the house? I’m going to get some things for the next few days for me, and some stuff for Kam.” She offered kindly, but his mother was too worked up to speak. So, Levi spoke for them both. He stood up, giving Anna some cash to pick up some snacks.
“Here, take this and just get anything you want. Grab us some Advil, chips and a couple drinks please.” He said kindly, hugging Anna and squeezing her lovingly. The saddened father reluctantly released her, “I can do that, text me or call me if you all need anything else.” Anna said, and soon she was on her way. The first stop was the house she shared with Kameron, to grab necessities.
Phone chargers, laptop, multiple changes of clothes and toiletries for showering. Anna also grabbed a few blankets and pillows, for her and his parents. She also took Kameron’s pillow, and his favorite fleece throw. She figured he would want his own things from home once he woke up, to make his hospital stay a little less scary and sad. Picking out a few baggy, comfy outfits for Kameron as well she tossed them in the bag and headed out.
The next stop was Walmart, to grab snacks and some cheap headphones for all three of them. That way they could watch movies, listen to music or YouTube when they were stuck in the waiting room. Anna got a barrage of snacks, so many bags of chips and multiple twelve packs of sodas. The hospital was huge, it had a cafeteria but the snacks would be good for between meals or boredom eating. Not to mention hospital food was expensive, and they were going to be spending a lot of money as is on Kameron’s medical bills.
The young woman sighed heavily, paying for everything and dragging it all out to her car. She stared at all the bags in the back, her eyes scanning in reluctance. Slowly she slumped back into her seat, hands gripping at the steering wheel. Her knuckles turned white her her grip, tears teased her eyes. She sucked in a deep breath, groaning in what felt like the worst heartache she’d ever experienced.
Life wouldn’t be the same anymore, and she was so distraught over Kameron. Would he survive, what did his future look like? Would he be able to handle this mentally? So many questions no one could answer, all she knew in this moment was that she loved him. She loved him more than anything, so she was prepared to do what it took. She’d be there for everything, even if everything meant Kameron’s last breath. That broke the flood gates, that thought crushed her. The tears rolled quickly, she couldn’t stop it.
Her heart hurt so bad, her poor sweet boy. It took her several minutes to gather herself enough to drive, and she made a beeline for the hospital. Kameron was at a level I trauma hospital, so he was in the best hands but it didn’t really ease her mind at all. She just wanted to see him, to touch him and know he was still alive. A part of her felt like he was gone already, and it scared the shit out of her.
She pulled into the parking garage, paid and grabbed everything she could carry. Anna made her way upstairs to the top floor, where Kameron was. She plopped down in the chair, the room was quiet and dark as another family tried to get some sleep. The clock seemed stuck on 8pm and it was starting to tear her down, she just wanted to see him. Visiting hours couldn’t come soon enough, it was so agonizing. Words replayed in her head, she felt like she was all over the place. Her hands slid up into her hair with a heavy exhale, this would be such a long night.
(Im so sorry for lack of content and stuff you guys, I know I keep apologizing but im sure you can all appreciate how crazy life gets. These last two weeks especially have been horrific. The week of September 27th-October1st was just horrible, we spent four days at the hospital in the MICU with my mother in law. She caught the big C in august and ended up with post C pneumonia. She passed October 1st and it was go-go from there. We were with her for her last breath, and my fiancé hasn’t been handling things well. So we’ve been dealing with all that comes from these situations, not to give you a sob story or lay my crap out there for you guys. But if my writing sucks a bit this update, it’s because it was written during down times on like four hours of sleep. Anyway, enough of me rambling. More Kameron content to come!)
