Description As direct replacements to the earlier FA’s, the SSE traded in their 20 FA-1s and their 5 FB-1s to EMD for 25 GP30s in 1962. Had EMD continued production of the GP30, it’s likely the SSE would’ve gotten even more.

They were so beloved by crews that by the 1990s, when the GP30s were starting to be retired on other railroads, SSE rebuilt them to RoadMates, "GPMATES" as they are called. Currently, all 25 of them work in the massive Stanislaus Yard in Modesto, where the Stanislaus Subdivision turns into the Merced Sub.
