Description
Long tutorial is long. Again @_@... I have got to stop making such long tutorials. Originally it was even longer before I increased the width of the whole thing. >_>Anyway, my basic Lighting Tutorial! This is for all of you who have trouble with lighting and how to apply it correctly in your works. This is how I got to understand it so don't take me for a pro or anything, though, but hopefully, it'll be somewhat helpful.
All photos in it are © me so no ripping, please.
Special thanks go to Brad and Nysha for letting me use some of their works. <3

Wow that's a lot to take in at once, but all the same this tutorial is incredibly helpful. Now to just get down the application part of this.
Very nice work on the tutorial!

Thank you. The world needs more tutorials like this.
It's great how you used a ball and real photos to illustrate the concepts, as well as applying it. And to manga style at that! It's not straightforward to see how real light works in that style, so thanks for the demo.

This is perfect it makes me wanna cry. No joke. I had "Aha!" moments while reading this. THIS is what I was looking for when I think of an in-depth lighting tutorial. And you call this basic? If this is your basic you've earned a watch and a fave from me, my friend.

Lol, thanks, I'm glad it could help you. xD
I suppose I called it basic because there's still more to lighting than it was mentioned here but I'm glad I covered it well enough for people to think it's more than just that. And thanks for the watch and fave, too~

This was really helpful, thanks Do you know any trick to find out which colour scheme you have to use in a setting? What I mean: If you look at the picture of Naoto standing in the moonlight, not only the shadows and highlights are affected by the background but the whole colours in general (for example the skin tone isn't as reddish anymore as before). I'm a beginner when it comes to colouring (guess I should stop avoiding it XD) and whenever I try the results usually don't look very natural since I always have problems in finding out which colours I have to use in a, lets say, forest or night setting, so the outcome usually doesn't look that natural <<

Thanks, glad it was helpful to you! :3
Uhh, well that depends a lot on the overall setting and what colors are predominant, what lighting there is, what time of day/night is it, what things are more closer than the others, perspective etc. I can link you to another useful page I found recently, hope it helps you more: [link]

Well, I've realized how it all works by watching things in nature mostly but also by watching other awesome artists incorporate lighting in their works. It's really not that hard and complicated once you get the hang of it. xD
Good luck with your future projects! May they be booty-licious as this one. xD

This is a very nice tutorial. I love the way you show how the light reflects off things and bonces back onto the object. there are many tutorials that try to explain why the light affects objects this way but do not show where it comes from.

Nice, practical guide. Reminds me a lot of this series on light, but examples and putting it into context for manga-style artists is great to see.
