I really like this technique for borders; it's much more intuitive for the viewer than the method I use. I'm guessing it goes something like:
1. Define the borders with a pencil tool a few pixels wide.
2. Select along the border/coastline and Invert the selection so everywhere but that region is selected.
3. Create a new layer and fill the selection with the country's designated color.
4. Deselect and blur theΒ area, so it fades into the territory. Create an extra layer or two with varying degrees of blur.
5. Re-establish the selection from earlier and delete.
6. Adjust layer opacity as appropriate.
Is this roughly correct? If so, then you should be able to fix the interior-lake borders by simply including them in the initial selection, so no color is blurring out from them.
The bevel/emboss technique you use here works well enough for a quick-and-dirty map technique, but it tends to give the mountains an unnatural steepness in places. Still, in several places, you make it work very well, especially in the small southeast range.

Honestly ... I got this achievement by trying to follow a step by step tutorial that I found on the Cartographer's Guild. I do not remember exactly which one, but I seem to remember that I found in the list of tutorials for GIMP and PS. We say that the method using the tutorial for the creation of lakes and mountains is not difficult but it is a bit laborious. Personally I prefer the old style maps, such as Kerberos or other I've done. On this style I can say that I think something is still missing ... I have to work a little!

Looks pretty good.
Though I admit that I can't help but think that the bodies of water within each border shouldn't have a border of their own.
Its just looks out of place to me.

But then, that's just my opinion.

I fully agree. It 's definitely just a test .... I have to work on it.
