Description
During the last month I tried a lot of different distros. But, most of all I'm disappointed with an upcoming Ubuntu's Unity shell. By my opinion, Unity is the worst thing ever someone could do with GNOME2. I do not know how about you, but for me it has absolutely non-intuitive interface, is too buggy (and I'm not sure they will have a time before a final release to fix all bugs) and heavy as a Second World War's period tank. Pity!I also have a mixed feelings about GNOME3. Maybe it's not completely ready yet or maybe I'm not used to it yet. Also, new non-proprietary drivers do not work well for me. Maybe they work for your video card. I do not know. Too many “maybe”s.
Well, now about this shot. This is not a LMDE as you may think because of colour-gamma. That's the Debian Squeeze with “classic” GNOME2 DE without any patches. Tried to give it some "retro" look, so, there's no dock, just classic top/bottom panels. Debian is really amazing, fast and pure!

OS – Debian Squeeze .
GTK2 theme and Metacity – Litestyle Suite (Mint version from a Watered-Down Range, also matches well deviantART's colour-scheme) by ~weakhead .
Icons – Faenza-Mint by john007 .
CoverGloobus – included by default “45Controls” skin.
Background – that's White Flowers by ~xnhan00 , but blurred and with some noise added. An original version goes fine too.
Conky – standard conky setup from the CrunchBang Linux . Just removed what I do not need.
Running applications – DeadBeef, CoverGloobus, conky and the “Star Wars” movie in a terminal.
In case of your interest, please, push the "Download" button, because it doesn't look sharp when it's auto-resized by DA.
Sorry for blurring my host-name and some specs.

I agree about Ubuntu and Unity. I'm happily using a Debian sid derivative, aptosid xfce (formerly known as sidux), and yes, Debian is the best thing ever happened to GNU/Linux.

Fedora is very nice! Seems, you are on Fedora 14 now. Fedora 15 comes with GMOME3.

Is Unity in stable release? Do you think they rushed it?
I'm not a Linux user but I've seen some Debian screenshots and didn't imagine in can look as nice as in this screen. I am on the hunt for a new version of Linux to try, though. This site has been of help, if you haven't seen it yet: DistroWatch [link]

No, Ubuntu with Unity is in a RC stage. Just few days left before the final release.
What you see on my screenshot is almost default setup of Debian. You may do with the interface whatever you wish in the same way as in Ubuntu.
On a DistroWatch it's written that Debian is less user-friendly than Ubuntu (which is based on Debian unstable, by the way), but in reality, if you are used to any distro which is based on a Debian, you also can get used to Debian easily. So, give it a try. There is a special Debian forum and everyone there will be glad to help you.

If Gnome 3 isn't good enough I'll use XFCE. 4.8 is really good. I tried Unity yesterday and it was quite a mess.
Even KDE is quite good... but hard to customize for a pixel artist.
My wish though is an interface based entirely on XML and CSS(3).

Absolutely agree. I like XFCE 4.8 very much! But, Xubuntu (I downloaded Xubuntu 11.04 a few days ago) has very bad implementation of it. I've updated Xubuntu after installation and it was really disappointing to get some not needed for Xubuntu GNOME packages. Imagine, that after update I got gnome-global-menu for Firefox (which is used in Ubuntu), GNOME sys-monitor (while XFCE sys-monitor was kept) and Thunar crashed several times. Despite of this, even now Xubuntu beats Ubuntu in all aspects.
Ideal version is Debian with XFCE. It's possible to download an image from the Debian Live project. But, they have XFCE 4.6 right now. I'll wait to 4.8.
GNOME Shell is quite good idea and it uses CSS as I know from *half-left who makes GNOME Shell themes.
Seems that Unity is a dead born project.

Oh, yes! I'm in live with Debian!
By the way, Mac uses FreeBSD kernel. And here is an announcement by Debian team - "Debian 6.0 "Squeeze" introduces technical previews of two new ports to the kernel of the FreeBSD project using the known Debian/GNU userland: Debian GNU/kFreeBSD for the 32-bit PC (kfreebsd-i386) and the 64-bit PC (kfreebsd-amd64). These ports are the first ones ever to be included in a Debian release which are not based on the Linux kernel."
So, one day we may see Debian on a FreeBSD kernel, he-he.

That#s incorrect. Mac OS has a mach kernel, freebsd doesn't.

I do not have Mac and accordingly I'm not interested with it too much (yet). Have no idea will I buy it in the future or I'll buy the PC again. All I know about it is from an occasional there and here information like this - [link] . Some of my friends use Mac, but they do note care about the kernels, he-he. And I somehow did not have the time to dig in there machines deeper. So, I guess, you are right.

i agree with my "previous speaker" - the colors are really fantastic!
my last (and very short) experience with unity ended yesterday. i think its useful on little screens like netbooks etc. have. but on a 30-inch-screen it looks simply lousy. especially the application-menu on the panel. on a large screen you could have 20 inch and more distance between the menu an its window. who's brain could invent such an idea ...
so i turned back to gnome3, which i've tested for more than a week. it is a heavy "caesura" - like gnome2 was in the beginning. but history shows, that all those tools and capabilities to customize will come back. and one thing i can postulate by now: the gnome3-shell is very clear and useful (- without being clueless like unity).
(p.s.: gnome3 runs for ati-graphic-card-users on archlinux without any need to configure or tweak - right out of the box and fast as lightning! just follow the wiki ...)

Seems, that Unity was Canonical's demand and the author of such terrible idea was Mark himself. Looks like father killed his son, he-he.
I have an old nVidia card. Have to change my PC. Maybe new drivers are good for ATI cards.
Yes, I'm sure, they finally will fix all this glitches and bugs in GNOME3. But this will take some time. And yes, according to my friend *half-left who specializes on GNOME Shell's customization, it's very promising in terms of tweaking and customization. Lets wait a bit. I do not want to jump from an old limousine into a modern, but not so reliable car.

hum - with an old videocard without actual 3d-capabilitys you wont get anywhere with gnome3 than into fallback-mode. this is no fair chance in my opinion ...
if i only could email you one of the hundred ati-cards lying on my desk. there are some really brave models among them ...

My card has 3D support. It's nVidia FX 5200. It's old, but I do not have significant problems with that card even on Windows 7.
There is no use for me to change just the video card. I want to change the whole system.
