Description
While attending the US Naval Schools of Photography in Pensacola, Florida I entered a local photo contest called "Patterns and Designs". I captured this image by sneaking into the old Pensacola lighthouse (built in the 1850's) and, with the camera precariously perched on a tripod, used a timed exposure of about 2 minutes. The camera was some sort of Canon SLR and the film was probably Kodak Tri-X. As I recall this photo won second place, and I also placed a print of it and other lighthouse photos in a file I found at the local library. Perhaps my photos are still there?Viewing all the outstanding photography on DA has motivated me to buy a better camera (all I have is a small, digital point-and-shoot) and try to reconnect with my earlier photographer self (mediocre as it was). In another lifetime I was a photographer while serving in the US Navy, but sadly my collection of photos/negatives was lost many years ago during a move.
While cleaning out a closet in the spare room I did find an old briefcase with a few prints tucked away inside and decided to upload a few so I have at least a few things on DA. They will have to do for now.

This is a great photo. I cannot explain quite what draws my eye, but it is surely something. Maybe it is the patterns, or the way the stairs gently go away from the camera. Or, maybe it is the lighting. Keep up the great work!

Thanks, I also love lighthouses and have explored many whiling stationed on the east coast. I lived near the Cape Henry Light in Virginia Beach and used to love to climb to the top.
The stairs you photographed are like very large lighthouse stairs, and I really like that photo.

Oh no, I never thought of you having a Calli accent. Do you sound like that surfing turtle from "Finding Nemo"? Glad you like the photo. Just think of all the footsteps that 150 year old spiral staircase has seen; many who trod upon it have been dust for a century. BTW that photo was probably taken before you were born. Yes I do feel old.

LOL I really don't have much of one. Californians are known for their way of talking, not really an accent. But you get a variety here. You hear some people with a surfing accent, others with a sort of elite "popstar" way of talking, and others with just a normal accent. But all the kids say the word "like" probably every other word. Someone from another state would say "I went down to the store to get some milk." the Californian kids/teens/young adults would say "I went down to like the store to like get some milk."
Yes the photo is just fabulous! It looks professional.

I guess CA is much like Dallas, and there are people with many different accents, or even no accent. I certainly don't have a Texas accent, although I was 10 when we moved here. For some reason I imagined you without much of an accent. I have a theory that some people are accent resistant. My parents don't have accents, yet their family members raised in the same areas of the country do. Like, I know what you mean about the gratuitous use of the work "like" (often as a verb and adverb) by people in CA. How in theworld did that ever get started?

I actually don't have much of an accent. I just sometimes say things in a Californian way because I've lived here for so long. And I sometimes say things with a Floridian drawl. LOL!

Totally rad! It would, like, gag me with a spoon if you had some gnarly accent.
