Description
This was my last character design assignment for my first year of animation class. A fairly straight forward assignment, just 8 poses and 8 expressions compiled onto one model sheet. I formatted it to look like the model sheets for Looney Tunes characters (in that there is one large color model in the center surrounded by line drawings.Any constructive criticism is appreciated and welcomed (don't worry about offending me, I love constructive criticism).

This is so exciting to see! i have this overwhelming urge to ask you 4 million questions about going to school for animation, but i'll resist e.deviantart.net/emoticons/a/a… " width="19" height="19" alt="
" title="Sweating a little..."/>
Now then, really getting into it... First off your line work is beautiful, very crisp & clean, nice variation in widths without drawing focus away from the character as a whole. He's got a lot of lovely expressions displayed & is very consistent throughout which is SO difficult to do. one thing i noticed right off is that there isn't a ton of squash & stretch used in his expressions, which i am used to seeing in such curvy animation. it's obviously there in the 'shocked' expression, and maybe a bit in the voodoo spell casting expression, but typically i'm used to seeing more of it in cartoons that take this much liberty with expanding the reality of the creature they're representing. he's also the friendliest voodoo witch doctor or alligator i have ever seen - which could be perfect, depending on his roll, it does make the more menacing expression (on the inner right side) seem a bit out of character, but again, that depends on his place in the story, so it's hard to say. if i had to get super nitpicky i'd complain that his tail looks a bit poofy in the bottom right (reclining) picture, but i had to really really hunt for anything i didn't visually adore. overall it's clear you put a lot of time & effort into this character & this character sheet and i could absolutely see him in a cartoon, so as far as i'm concerned you've done your job, & done it well.
now, i'm not a great (or even good) artist & this is my first critique, so take that as you will, but i like to think i'm a much better observer than producer of art e.deviantart.net/emoticons/a/a… " width="19" height="19" alt="

Hey, thanks for taking the time to review my stuff. This is the first time anyone has ever critiqued my work with the critique feature, so I was really excited to read it.
Thanks for all the compliments, and I agree with you on all your points. Especially about needing to add more squash and stretch, that is something I definitely need to work on and am glad you pointed.
I noticed at the beginning you said you had a lot of questions about animation school but resisted the urge to ask. Feel free to ask, I'm happy to answer any questions.

Gaaahh man this guy is adorable.
What does someone even say as critique to a stylized piece like this though? "Oh, it's a little too/not exaggerated enough"? I don't want to sound like some unskilled brown noser by saying it looks great, but I also wouldn't want to try to dig for things to change about it "just because it's critique". What would you yourself say you weren't satisfied with?

Thank you, everyone seems to think this guy is pretty cute.
I guess what I am least satisfied with about this drawing is the squash and stretch on the face. I feel that I could have done more with it.

That's a cool thing to note. I've felt it's very useful as well as interesting to hear what the artist themselves feel they could have worked more on.

Thank you, that's kind of you to notice. I grew up with classic warner brothers cartoons and they have definitely influenced my drawings. It's nice to see someone else who appreciates the old classic cartoons.

Nice. The poses you chose show a lot of life. Really like the one with him on his tail. Can't wait to see your animations as you progress in your schooling.
Only criticism I can see is a minor one. The bottom left pose is missing the necklace.

I knew it was only a matter of time before someone spotted that. I noticed the missing necklace a while after this was finished, and I said to myself that if anyone asks, I'll just say he forgot to put it on that morning. Oh well, dumb mistake on my part. Thanks for pointing it out to me, I appreciate your honest input. And thanks for all the compliments.

An amazing set of emotion and movement. Very clean lines and easily readable. I think my favourite part is the hypnotic gesture. This has got a real nice old school , Winsor McKay type quality which is very appealing.
Is it maybe a little smooth for a Gator especially a Voodoo one? Maybe ramp up the Voodoo aspects, painted face, Top hat and chicken feet etc. Just kinda spitballing here maybe that would make him lose his goofy charm. Personally, I can't wait to see your work on the big or small screen. It's gonna be awesome.

Thank you very much, I appreciate the constructive criticism. If you think this guy is smooth you should see his original design, it's much smoother (his snout was rounded like a pancake). But yeah I have to work on making characters with less smooth and rounded qualities, at school I'm known as the marshmallow guy because all my characters look like they're made of marshmallows. So yeah I will definitely work on that. Thanks for the critique and thanks for the ideas.

You're very welcome. I remembered an article on John Kricfalusi's (Ren and Stimpy) blog featuring Tex Avery and why his characters were so appealing. He broke the designs down into bare elements like right angles and contrasting curves, especially where parts join together forming those "T" intersections. A mix of sharps and rounds.
I didn't want to comment with one word " Cool" or "Awesome". Of course the piece was both of these and more. I was just offering a different, pretty cliched quite honestly , take on your Voodoo Gator.
There's another character designer called Ben Ballistreri whose work explores the same themes and settings as your own. A similar sort of vibe. Sort of Indiana Jones, Duck Tales type of stuff. Very European comics influenced.
Looking forward to your next piece.
