The tutorial isnt consistent. Somewhat cluttered.
I had a hard time understanding what you mean sometimes. Specially after the magnetic tool step, while having the selection still...selected.
Also, the milk splash images you provide are not the ones that you use in the tutorial.
But the effect is simply amazing. I congratulate you on that
