Wonderful colours as usual, Conan scars add a nice touch. Great Work.

Thanks! Thatβs how I always envisioned him, covered in scars, possibly a broken nose and such...

Amazing work! Definitely reminiscent of Frazetta's Conan paintings.

Thank you!! Hard to move far from Frazettaβs take. Or John Buscemaβs too...

Hey the Tower of the Elephant! Not a lot of people know about the time Conan met a damn space-alien.

True. Although some of the creatures he met looked like close relatives of HPLβs Space Gods...

Just remembered. In "A Haunter of the Dark" Lovecraft directly references events in "The Shadow Kingdom" an old Kull story. So yeah. It's a shared universe.

Howard and Lovecraft liked to play off of each other. To the point where Howard's stories are pretty much considered canon with the Cthulhu mythos. (In fact there's a softcover anthology collection of Howard's stories called "The Cthulhu Mythos") One of my favorite horror stories (The Pigeons From Hell) came about because Lovecraft told Howard the south was not an appropriate setting for gothic horror and Howard said hold my beer. He ended up writing what is in my opinion a "Lovecraft" story second only to "The Colour Out of Space."

Yep, there are many βcrossoversβ between their universes. Pigeons from hell is a classic, I was obsessed with the βSkull Faceβ anthology as a teenager, all those stories are amazing I had to buy a second copy of the book for the first was worn out by all the times i read them...

There's never enough Conan art out there and yours is a masterpiece. Lovely to see the elements of the stories in it too.

I love Conan the barbarian, I just finished watching The Whole Wide World yesterday, Robert E Howard would be happy knowing his character is being drawn to this day in such quality too!

Thank you thatβs a huge compliment! I literally grew up with Howardβs epics, especially Conan, through comics and the books and to this day is my favorite character. Thatβs a great movie too!

...is that a winged elephant?

It's an alien. It's Yag-Kosha from The Tower of the Elephant. (At least I suspect it is, hell of a coincidence if it's something else)

A winged alien elephant sounds pretty cool to me, I should definitely read the books!

βTower of the Elephant is a masterpieceβ, a must for any Howard fan or heroic fantasy in general. Yag-Kosha is from an ancient alien race, humanoids with elephant-like heads and wings...in the story heβs supposed to be the last one of his race, but is he?...

I followed your advice and just finished reading the short story! I hadn't read any of Howard's books before, and I really enjoyed his way of describing the various sceneries... It was very atmospheric, kind of like a litterary equivalent of strongly contrasted paintings (if that makes any sense ^^). And I finally understood why people say that Conan the Barbarian is the ancestor of modern tabletop RPGs... it sounds just like a crazy game night (except there's only one overpowered player) I'll probably read more of Howard's stories soon!
Also, since I hadn't yet complimented you on this painting: it's amazing, I love how you worked with colour! And it makes me want to learn more about anatomy, too ^^

Thank you!! Iβm glad you enjoyed the story! Howardβs prose is so vivid, thatβs why translated so well into any visual media.Β

Yeah The Tower of the Elephant is a particularly good story for giving that impression. Other good Conan "dungeon crawlers" include Rogues in the House, The Scarlet Citadel, and Red Nails.

Thank you very much, I was wondering where I should start! I'll try to find free ebook versions of these stories ^^

Try Project Gutenberg. All the original Conan stories written by Howard are public domain so I'm pretty sure they have all of them.
