AA: Dual Destinies has its problems-- it suffers from way too easy/non-existant gameplay at times, for example-, though I think all in all I liked it. We certainly got some cool new characters out of it! BEWARE OF Dual Destinies ENDGAME SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS.

Date; 12.February 2014.

I can't say I'm a HUGE fan of this pairing, but god... Blackquill has so many... ukey qualities. The shackles, the electric shocks and stuff.... I don't ship this pairing THAT much, but somehow, it's not difficult to imagine the stuff they can do...

.... GAH I have such a dirty mind! *hides in shame*

Pff, shackled!Blackquill is best Blackquill. Though it is fascinating how they managed to still have a somewhat semi-equal power dynamic, despite the shackles/stuff.

I do ship it that much and I have no shame or excuses.

Maybe it's because Fulbright's so oblivious half the time. XD He was an entertaining guy.
*spoiler*

Taking case 5 into account though... I can totally see Fulbright/Phantom as the seme. Something about that relationship is just so goddamn dangerous.

*end spoiler*

Well, I suppose Blackquill, despite having all those uke-y qualities, also has a very tough personality. I imagine he is a lot gentler when faced with more warm hearted characters, whilst becoming a lot scarier and harsher when it comes to equally scary characters.

And I really hope you haven't taken this the wrong way... *twiddles fingers* I may not be a huge fan of Fulbright x Blackquill, but I don't hate it. I think it's a lot more liberating to see different angles on a character, and you can only see the complete picture by making them interact with other characters and environments... So, um, it's not my OTP, but I'm not like, repulsed by it. Hope I haven't upset you or anything. ):

I like tough!sub!Blackquill. Makes for interesting interaction. And heh, the Phantom adds so many layers of... something to this dynamic, it's beautiful.

Yeah sure, I can totally see postgame Blackquill being much more gentle when talking to Junie or Athena.

Haha, no that was more meant as a half-tongue in cheek comment. c: I really don't mind someone having different preferences. Short of actual Being repulsed-homophobic comments, I'm difficult to upset over shipping, I think. Ship and let ship, ya know? <3 So now worries, all's fine.

I often wonder what the Phantom must have secretly been thinking, all the time while he's acting as Bobby Fulbright and pretending to be a lovable idiot around Blackquill... I'm sure he was well aware of who Blackquill is and all, right? I wonder why he never made any attempts on Blackquill's life or anything?

^_^ I'm sure Blackquill has a soft heart when it comes to little girls. He seems kinda like a big brother-ly figure to me. Well, a big brother who at first glance wouldn't appear to have the greatest influence upon little girls. XP

Oh good. I'm glad we're OK. I had an awful run-in with another person over pairings once. We were eventually able to calm down and debate normally though, without being too harsh on each other, so that was OK, but I have to admit it was unpleasant and upsetting to begin with. -_- Ah well. Thanks for being so understanding!

Haahh, who knows. One of the reasons Phantom fanfictions are so fascinating - because there's a lot of room for speculation in this year of being Bobby Fulbright.

Why bother with attempts on someone's life who's sitting on death row anyway? *g* Seems like an unnecessary risk/effort. Which would have worked too, if the Phantom themselves hadn't brought the lighter evidence up. Brain lapse, genuinely trying to save Blackquill, or simply a plot hole? Idek.

Jup, big brother-ly is spot on. That is how Blackquill and Athena looked to me ingame, actually. Though he might have to adjust a little after seven years of pretending to be a callous murderer. xD

Ugh. :/ At least it didn't escalate? I ...don't really get shipping wars. Everyone has pairings they dislike or find frustrating, but what's the point in telling someone else they're wrong for liking something?
Especially when you can use the same energy and do something productive instead, like creating more content for your own ships. |D

I'm really wondering about the organisation behind the Phantom. Judging by the ending of Case 5... This 'Phantom' is really one of the smaller pawns. I think this promises a GS6. :3

Mmh, good point. Guess it would have been kinda hard to cover up. I'm still trying to wrap my head around 'a man who feels no fear'. Is he honestly human or some kind of robot??? (I haven't played the game, but I watched a few walkthroughs and intermittent scenes... So I've probably missed out a lot of the plot... -_-)

I hear the shadows under his eyes were because he used to cry every night in prison... I can't really imagine it, but it still feels very sweet all the same.

I don't know... I guess it's just when you feel a little too passionately about something. You probably get a little over-excited and end up sounding a lot harsher than you mean to be... Pfft. Yeah. Let's just draw and write about our OTPs already!

... To be honest, my opinions change pretty quickly, so I tend to accept most pairings. There's none that I really HATE, per se, because if I see something I don't like, I don't see any point in ranting about it, I just click back. I'm pretty sure it won't be long before I start shipping Fulbright x Blackquill too! I'm... pretty easily converted. XD

Beware, lots of text RUN AWAY NOW
Didn't they already confirm GS6?

Haha, no, the Phantom's flesh and blood. And there are many way to interpret the Phantom's emotions. So, fear. Their actions at least imply that they don't feel fear in life threatening situations (that jump...). Except at the same time, they do have fear. This is canon. Fear is what ends up overpowering them.

Maybe no fear as long as they feel themselves in control (e.g. they know how far they can jump, no problem!) while fear crashes down when something's threatening to unmask them? Or maybe in broader terms, anything outside their control that threatens their survival? Your guess is as good as mine.

Emotions in general. If I remember correctly the Phantom says that they underwent some sort of training to be able to simulate emotions. (...I don't have the exact quote. Something like that.) So maybe they do have emotions and are just surpressing them. ...or maybe they really don't and existential fear is the only thing they're capable of. Who knows.

Here 's a few speculative thoughts on the Phantom vs the real Bobby Fulbright and Morality. I found this really interesting and it might get you started on Phantom thoughts. Yay for fandom speculations!

On that topic, maybe Turnabout to the Past might interest you? It's a take on what the backstory and memory/emotions of the Phantom might be. One of the top stories exploring the Phantom, if you don't know of it. Eventually in the latter parts, it does turn into Phantomquill-- though the focus is generally on the plot.

...and this focuses more on Blackquill than the Phantom admittedly so I have no excuse to link this here, none-- but if I'm throwing links around anyway, I might as well include one to my personal favourite atm:
Just Fake It (1 , 2 , 3 ) This is completely non-shippy as of yet, but will most likely become Blackbright in the future. It's also hilarious and has awesome characterisation. <3

Also: Go play the game~! /mandatory comment.

Jup, about the tear marks, that's true. Many people like to headcanon that pre-prison!Simon used to be this really sweet, idealistic young prosecutor.

The only acceptable way to try to convert someone to your otp(s), I feel, is to get them hooked on awesome fanfic/fanart/stuff. xD Less obnoxious and keeps the focus on the awesome stuff instead of shipping hate. I know I've ended up shipping a few things because of that.

...this is a monster of a reply. Way to go, Alexis.

KolKolCat In reply to AlexisRenard [2014-05-27 23:48:27 +0000 UTC]

Yay! Long reply! Beware, you have unleashed a monster of replier

Are you talking about the game with Phoenix's ancestor? I didn't think that was GS6.... I kinda assumed it was a spin-off. Huh.

Ah, I understand that the Phantom does feel fear in the end. His breakdown was fantastic, though I have to admit the first time I watched it during the walkthrough I hid behind a cushion for the entirety until he got shot. (It was probably the ripping noise. And the fact that him being frightened whilst looking like Phoenix with eyes all hollow and stuff made him really creepy) Yeaaah I'm kinda a wuss. XD I freak out every time the suspense music plays in AA. XD And I just about freak out along with the culprits everytime they do their breakdown.

Looking up the Phantom though....... He just... really disturbs me. He doesn't feel freaking human anymore, unlike all the other culprits before him, who were all, to some degree, humans, and their actions were understandable to some twisted degree. But the Phantom doesn't know remember his name, his life... Nothing! He feels nothing. That's horrifying. (Actually, also makes you wonder whether he just goes around being whoever he's pretending to be ALL the time. Even when he's alone??? I have images of the Phantom acting like Bobby Fulbright even when he doesn't need to be...)

Basically I'm scared of the Phantom and I don't understand him AT ALL. Thanks for the links though! :3 Character study for PW is always very interesting. It feels very... real, somehow. Reading that piece, I wonder if all those 'mistakes' that 'Bobby' made were intentional on the writer's behalf? (Though I have to admit when Simon first got shocked I laughed... And then felt horrible afterwards. Poor boy.)

Turnabout to the Past looks very good. :3 Actually, screw that. I couldn't resist and read the whole first chapter. It seems brilliant. Gah. Must. Reply. Before. Reading.......

Actually, I was thinking about BlackBright the other day and when I looked up Bobby, I realised that he'd died around a year ago. If Simon and the real Fulbright worked together before (unless the case of Nine Tails Vale was his first prosecuting case in prison, in which case my idea all goes down the drain) then does that mean Simon worked with the real Fulbright before... And then one day Fulbright died and 'Fulbright' took his place and Simon didn't realise? I imagine that must be quite horrifying.

... Also I think it'd be quite sweet if Simon went to visit the real Bobby's grave.

.... And oh my god, stop distracting me with brilliant fanfics whilst I'm trying to reply dammit QAQ I really like these stories... So good... *cries* Fine. I've been successfully converted? Happy? *throws tantrum* And I thought I'd settle for just Cykesquill...

I wish I could play the game. ): But I'm never gonna get a 3DS, like, ever. So it's Youtube and the walkthroughs for me... Playing the game really is different to watching someone else play it though... You can squeal and shiver and laugh at your own pace. It's a good feeling.

.... Meh. Personally I don't think Blackquill was too sweet and innocent as a prosecutor before jail.... I'm sure that even in the present Blackquill there are traces of what he was like before. Perhaps he still had a similar sense of humour, except one that was more warm and teasing rather than outright insulting/dark humour? (Though admittedly I rather like his bitter and morbid sense of humour. XD)

Well, to be honest, most of the pairings I really love are all focused around one character I absolutely adore. In AA, for example, I enjoy Phoenix x Miles, Franziska/Miles (though I prefer their brother/sister relationship generally) Kay x Miles, Maya x Miles, Oldbag x Miles Jk, jk. No. ... Every different pairing brings out a different side, and a different feel to that one central character for me. Most of the time, if you see the pairings I like.... You can spot my favourite characters preeeetty quickly. XD

AlexisRenard In reply to KolKolCat [2014-05-29 19:41:13 +0000 UTC]

I'm... not sure, tbh. I remember hearing that GS6 was supposed to be confirmed, but they might have been talking about that one? No idea.

Aww, that's sweet. Though yeah, Phantom!Phoenix was kinda a bit creepy.

And to be honest I'm coming directly from Dragon Age* (and before that, Hellsing with its killer undead), so characters with different mental/emotional layouts that end up having some understandable and some alien sides to them isn't that strange to me. Adds variety. There's a lot of odd ways to think/feel/experience the world in humans too. /shrug. Again, you don't need to take his words directly at face value because there are a lot of inconsistencies. He might say he doesn't feel a thing, but he sure acts irrational because of the feelings he isn't feeling. This contrariness is something I find very human, so I don't have as much of a problem with that. Now take... take Dahlia, for example, who never shows any inconsistency in her evil hate-- that, I find much harder to see as human.

*(Dragon Age, incidentally, also happens to have an embodiment/spirit of Justice. Go figure.)

Heh. The image of the Phantom sitting in Bobby's apartment and pretending to be Bobby for himself alone is... both creepy and hilariously sad. Makes for a nice headcanon! |D

I'm really not sure, about the mistakes-- if everything was intentional, than someone surly would have said something about the lighter. Then again, maybe I'm giving them too little credit. And personally I think the game implies that Blackquill did not know the real Fulbright at all. Wasn't it mentioned somewhere in Case 5 during the trial that they were partners for a year? --and real!Fulbright being a year dead would add up. However, that's certainly something a fic could explore, it's an easy enough AU. In fact, I've seen that very thing as a prompt a few times...

Haha, I actually just tried to link things that deal with the Phantom. Except the last one admittedly. That one is just too awesome not to link. It's just... really difficult to pick Phantom stuff out that does not also contain Blackbright. I'd have linked Turnabout to the Past even if it was completely non-shippy because it seemed discussion relevant. xD That said, if you do end up liking Blackbright that's certainly fine by me *g* (but I ...don't require you to or anything. Just, just to be clear on that.).

The similar taste of humour is a good point, considering Aura's humour and laugh!

Oldbag/Miles ftw! He has the best reactions. I got into the whole AA series via Investigations, so Edgeworth was my first favourite character too. I still remember that I debated with myself to get the other games-- because I knew they had some other protagonist and I wanted Edgeworth to be the protagonist of everything ever. |D
That's an interesting approach though. A little like a shipping kaleidoscope!

KolKolCat In reply to AlexisRenard [2014-05-29 20:21:20 +0000 UTC]

I was reading a few Youtube comments. Perhaps there are 2 AA games in planning? The Japanese one and a GS6? But don't hold me to that. -_- Whatever happens, AA still seems to have a pretty bright future. I'm amazed it can go so far without feeling stale. That truly takes something. A few spin-offs would be nice too. GUMSHOE GAME! XD Maybe even AAI3? (Though that seems a bit unlikely. They tied up everything pretty well in AAI2, it feels.)

I suppose you're right... To be honest, I was very focused upon Athena/Blackquill's side of the story rather than the Phantom's... Ah, characters like the Phantom are completely new to me, really... Maybe I'm a bit too innocent, but I think spies and agents must have the most horrific jobs, especially according to all those films and books and stuff... Betraying people who trust you? Not being able to trust anyone? It's kinda... shocking for me.... It would just kill me to do stuff like that, and so coming across characters like the Phantom and Calisto Yew just... D: I can't understand how...

I think, for me, I understood Dahlia's actions a bit more. (DOES THAT MAKE ME A BAD PERSON?! QAQ) I haven't finished Trials and Tribulations, so again, I don't have the full story, but I got the gist. In Dahlia I see a selfish woman who was willing to kill to get what she wanted. But being selfish is also a part of humanity, right? Besides, she's dislikable from the start. Finding out she was a murderer didn't hurt or shock me as badly as finding 'Fulbright' was a murderer.

By the way, I finished reading Turnabout to the Past! In one day! It was so good, I couldn't stop reading! And wow, that cover pic was by you? :3 I saw PengyChan mention it in her writer's comments, and I stared at the name for a long moment thinking: Hmmmmmmm... That looks familiar... Then I realised it was you! It was really good! It kind of... I dunno, but somehow he just looked like the Phantom, y'know? :3 Aaaaaah, anyway, TttP was a great read! I was absolutely enraptured by it, thanks for sharing it with me! I ended up chatting with PengyChan too, because of it. She's such a lovely person! Also, that other fic you sent me, Just Fake It, I think it was called? I loved that too! So funny! Both Blackquill and Fulbright made me laugh. 'Do you think they'll prolong my execution for a trial if I just kill him now?' Haha, I wish it was on FFN, so I could save it in my faves. Is it only 3 Chapters long??? (I'm on Chapter 2 and very unwilling to finish it! *sniff*) So good!!! I hope you don't mind, but if you still have good stuff stored away, please share some with me if you can! Wild horses can't drag me away from a good fic, and I really feel like... I'm beginning to like Simon/Fulbright, y'know...

........ I wonder if he practices before the mirror? The Phantom, I mean? 'IN JUSTICE WE TRUST!' (I saw a Youtube comment on Fulbright's Theme that was absolutely brilliant: 'In justice I trusted.' Summed up 'Fulbright' pretty well, I thought.) Would it be that illogical to assume that the Phantom just never bothers to remove his Fulbright persona? Cos if he did, surely he'd remember his own face.
.............. Actually, why does he wear so many masks on his face, anyway? (I mean I'm sure that his breakdown with mask ripping and stuff was more of a... metaphorical breakdown. XD And I was mildly disturbed to see he had a mask of Simon too....... I wonder why?)

Ah, I thought of writing something like that before... About the real Bobby and Simon... But it was a bit far out of my reach. I'm not so familiar with the newer characters, unlike Phoenix ad the others. (Even though, ironically enough, my first game was Apollo Justice) I'm kinda attached to Miles at the moment, heh heh.

Nah, it's OK. Some characters are sort of naturally associated with others, aren't they? Like Simon is with Athena and Bobby, and Phoenix is with Maya and Edgeworth etc. (And other characters, of course, but you get the idea.) And it's OK. :3 I want to withdraw my previous comment of 'I'm not SUCH a big fan of BlackBright'. XD It's becoming a bit of an eyesore for me now because I feel like a liar now...

Thinking about it... You're right. Aura and Simon both do that laughing and then slapping something thing. XD I really love it when Simon does that. I also have an eeny weeny bit of a crush on him. XD

Haha, I don't blame you! :3 Miles is the best. But like I said, my first game was AJ, so I felt a bit: Uuuugh Phoenix and Maya are just copies of Apollo and Trucy that's so weird I'm not playing them! ... But in the end I got into them and the Phoenix world took over the Apollo world for me. Haha. I only played the AAI games recently, but they were such a joy! I used to squeal just about every time Miles made an appearance in the PW games, AND NOW A GAME WHERE MILES IS CONSTANTLY PRESENT?! OMGGGGG! And I had the privilege of playing AAI2 because it had been translated into Chinese, which had actually just finished this year, I think, so I downloaded that and played that, and it was such a great Miles Edgeworth character study! So much fuuuuuun, and Kay x Miles too.... Which was great. Brought tears to my eyes. Also lots of pretty images. :3
Shipping kaleidoscope! XD Yeah, I suppose so... It's just something I seem to take on no matter what fandom I'm into.

Oh wow I was sure I replied. Then again, uni exam time hit so my replies are super slow anyway.

I'd be in favour some more spin of games with the prosecutors (and detectives) like AAI. Or a regular game with the whole cast of Rise from the Ashes back in the day, that would be awesome as well. Like, playing as Diego Armando with Jake Marshall or Lana Skye as detectives (and appearances from Gant, tiny!Ema and also Angel, who'd regularly kick Diego's ass) and Neil can be prosecutor. UST with EVERYONE. I'd play the hell out of that.

I needed a long time to start liking Athena tbh. She gave me the exact same instinctual STOP BEING IN MY FACE, DO NOT WANT GO AWAY Klavier gave me in AJ. But Klavier was the opponent and Apollo+Ema voiced my feelings plenty, so at least there was that. Athena... not so much. Klavier managed to redeem himself to "maybe you're okay" in the final case. Athena, I only started to be okay with after the end of the game with the help of the fandom. So I suppose I wasn't exactly big on emphasizing with her the first time I played through DD. Might be interesting how I perceive her on a replay.
Aw, understanding Dahlia doesn't make you a bad person. (I'm the last to judge anyway, in 90% of cases I like the villain of a show more than the protagonist /coughs).

Jup, I drew some stuff for TttP. That pic of the Phantom and two random sketches of scenes. The ref PengyChan gave me for it is one of Fulbright's early designs, funnily enough. Glad you like it! Even if it's not even properly rendered, haha. If I had known PengyChan would later end up asking me to use that thing as a cover page, I'd have bothered to do it properly. xD And yeah, she's an awesome person.
Just Fake it is being written, so just check their tumblr regularly. I think it's up to Chapter 9 or something. Which you properly figured out by now. Ah, well.
I'm also sure you looked around by now but there is some decent stuff in the blackbright tag of Archive of Our Own and tumblr. And the Ace Attorney kink meme. Though strangely, there's tons and tons of blackbright art while not that much fic.

I always liked that when you remove a space, you get "Injustice we trust". ;D I'm not sure how realistic the Phantom never taking his Fulbright mask off is but then this is Ace Attorney SO THIS IS PROBABLY EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED, haha.

Pffff, heh, eyesore. WE'LL JUST PRETEND THERE WAS NO SUCH COMMENT Shh don't worry about it I WON'T TELL.

Yeah I was really glad to see them both doing it. BigSis!Aura shows through <3

Now, that is interesting. Phoenix and Maya as copies of Apollo and Trucy, that's not something you hear everyday. *g* Playing AAI2 is neat though-- I haven't (no spoilers! ) Though I heard there's a fan translation going and I'm waiting for that to finish before I try that.
