Description
Work in progress shot for the Aeons of Eclipse painting(Screenshot directly from Photoshop- this is exactly how my Photoshop CS2 looks... for all you stalkery fans... except that it's shrunken a bit from my 1900x1600 resolution)
For those that keep asking about layers- there is NO layers. Layers lag at resolution of 12'000x12'000 pixels. I merge everything every 10 minutes.
Decided to show this one since the clients didn't like the airplane in it- so this painting was split in two different ones, which you can see here:

why do you first complete it in grey-scales?
why not make a coloured version right away?

just the way I do it.
better contrast ratios that way

i see, isn't harder too colour it afterwards? aside the contrast ratios?
π: 0 β©: 1
alexiuss In reply to Fiskus [2008-02-06 09:50:45 +0000 UTC]
that depends....
I like coloring it afterwards because it's a LOT easier to get smooth tones and I don't like it because sometimes color overlay messes with contrast ratios. its a stylistic choice, just like using acrylics or watercolors to illustrate a book cover.

Lol, every piece of yours amazes me, I can't get my head around it. I don't get where you get the patience...and the 3D-insight. I guess you're pretty mathematical? (Which I'm ANYthing but >___>.

I guess people are still sensitive about downed airplanes. Your work continues to impress! Hmm, this airplane looks really similar to the one in Consolation [link] (which has been on my desktop for ages, and many people seeing it have tried to reason out what's going on in the picture ). I guess there's only so many ways to pose an old airplane wreck in a picture without it being the sole focus, eh?

haha, maybe. it does look less crowded without the plane.
as for consolation- yea, I used the same plane as reference

If you don't use layers... How do you fix something, like the airplane they don't like, without starting all over?

Damn...even your "work in progress" pics are amazing...what talent you trully possess. I wish I could do that kind of thing with my writing. I have almost 70 pieces and none of them even remotely come close to this, you definitely are a true artist, well done.

I have been watching your work for some time now, and I can't seem to notice that first you always do your work in b&w and color it later. May I ask why is that and what method you use after?
Sorry if I rape your time, but since I'm trying to get better I had to ask.

stylistic choice that allows for more detail and more unified contrast ratios.

Holy crap. O_O For a detail lover like me, looking at this gives me the same feeling as opening presents!
Superb detailing, especially the lower right corner with the glowing plane windows (it's burning O_O) and the very realistic wreckage of a turbine (I think), and most of all... the dramatic perspective! *leans back to look at the eclipse*
The scene does feel a little depressing, but I don't think it's getting to me like it should. [The detail, oh the detail... *swoons*]

awesome! I've never seen this kind of painting from you before! great work! I reckon it'd be sick if you use like a really strong red/orange colour scheme for this
