Description
This is Novosibirsk, my hometown, capital of Siberia.The Chapel of St. Nicholas, originally built in 1915 to commemorate 300 years of Romanov rule, destroyed in 1930 and rebuilt in 1993, gleams in the middle of the photograph.
The plaque on it said: "This is the exact geographical center of Soviet Union."
I always wondered how exactly they measured that.
To me, as a kid, this had seemed like the center of the known world, the axis of intersections of trans-Siberian railways extending across Ural mountains to Kamchatka.
I returned to Novosibirsk during my Siberian trip in summer of 2007, to shoot this image during a thunderstorm, from the inside of a car standing in traffic.
If you're wondering- the sign on the building literally translates to: "Russ-government-fear", it's basically a humongous insurance company. I find the name rather inspiring and amusing either way.
This place, where I had lived for 9 years, had inspired my dreams and many of my paintings, as cloudscapes tend to be quite beautiful in Siberia.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sky is dark thanks to HDR photography- 1 over-exposed shot for ground and 2 separate underexposed shots for sky combined into one image.
Another awesome piece of work! To take this from a moving car is quite a feat! Great job! You did very well combining the shots. This makes me want to visit Siberia to take some pictures of the cloudscapes as well!
well, there are not railways in Kamchatka. It goes to Vladivostok. Kamchatka is a peninsula, so its kinda imposible to go there by railways.
I am in love with this photograph. It's so stunning.
I have a quick question about your technique.
As I understand, HDR is taking multiple exposures of the same shot, and I was wondering how the vehicles coming towards you stayed the same, as if you had just taken one photograph.
Hm... I guess I don't like how the cars are blurred on the left side of the screen. The fluorescents are all green too, don't like that. Pretty good, four stars out of five.
Novosibirsk - I've heard this name before, yeah, just a few suns ago in school, and although I've never been in Siberia, I thought that I know something about this place, all the things I've learned from my teachers. Well, I was so completely wrong! I couldn't imagine anything close to the impression of your nearly surreal photography. I don't know if your hometown really comes like this spaceship of a city, but the capital of Siberia must have a wild heart, and in my imagination there are bears and tigers just a few miles away from this colorful place. Now thinking of the plaque on the Chapel of St. Nicholas my blood runs cold, because I believe they are right, and you as a child supposing Novosibirsk as the center of the known world isn't something I'd laugh about. There are many secrets in this world, and there's something special with this places we call home.
I like Novosibirsk than St. Petersburg, there place isn't so big but people in there kinda friendly (or look friendly). I almost got picked pocket twice in St. Petersburg. and a lot of mobs too.
you are very very good with colours. I notice that you payed a lot of attention on the overall dynamic range. You observation is amazing/ I am most fascinated of looking at the highlights (streetlights, car lights and etc)... I am surprised to see they are not blown off at the same time.
May I ask, how much time you had out in this piece?
