I don't think most people get what "paid with recognition" means. If I may explain the joke it means their ripping you off/stealing from you with your permission.

Reminds me of a commercial I saw once... group of robbers try to rob a bank. They get into the vault, and find yogurt. Distracted from their quest for money, they begin to eat. Meanwhile, the security guards are sitting in the security booth at the local sperm bank, laughing... and laughing... and laughing...
