This is a beautiful pic/animation and I love the idea and the vibe it puts out, but I would have to agree that its lacking some kind of climax. As a picture it has a good dramatic effect, as an animation though it seems it needs to build up to something. I don't think it needs to be longer I just think it needs to build more tension and end with a bang. The contrast and colour theme is beatiful though and I love the sense of raw beauty and power contained in something that looks so delicate. I'm looking forward to seeing more work!

This is quite a beautiful piece, as a stationary piece and as an animation. As in the two critiques that preceded this one, I feel that the animation is a bit anti-climactic, albeit beautifully executed. The only thing I'd like to add to that is that the woman's hair has a somewhat unnatural movement to it. The painted portion of the woman's hair remains stationary in the background, while the newly rendered hair in the foreground moves in a direction that is contrary to the energy buildup coming from the woman's feet and flowing upward.

When I referenced the painting itself It seemed as if the flow of energy was coming from the direction of the spire in the distance, as opposed to coming from the woman. She does have an air of power about her, so a flow of energy around her makes sense, but perhaps something could be added, rushing to the woman from across the water? Just a thought.

Your work is gorgeous, as is your collaborator's, so please keep it up.

I am sorry to say that while the original piece is amazing and awe inspiring (Bringing us to new worlds of Alexius's creation), this "flash" animation is anti-climactic. It has no real point, almost like a televised ad, except it even lacks the true impact ads have on the populace.
I can see great promise in the vision, but the originality is really stale (almost every flash website I have seen has these effects, motifs) and and such the impact (of the blurry painting and ineffectual animation unfortunately make no significant, if not a negative impact on my viewing experience.
No offense is meant to either party over the course of this text.

As marvelous as this is, I am going to be blunt on this piece. As the effects are spectacular to look at and well done sound effects are great on the ears. But to me it is all over too soon, when she charges up with her tremendous power I thought "Holy crap something crazy is going to happen," but then its just a typical flash of white light and the sudden replay button screen coming on my face.

I guess what I am saying is, you should of added more to this piece. Because to me it was over too quickly, however I can see that your getting the hang of these animated images and so far they look awesome, but try to take advantage of this technique and make something witty and jaw dropping.

Overall this is a awesome piece to look at first time with splendid effects and animation, just falls too short and the story of this piece doesn't say much. Awesome piece nevertheless, keep up the great work and hope for you to improve even more awesome in the near future.

I have to agree with it. It definitely seemed like it was powering up for something that didn't happen. That was a bit anticlimactic.
However the art and effects were quite beautiful.

The animation on its own is cool and the hair gives me a ghostly ring/grudge/dark water kinda feeling. The painting is awesome ofcourse like usual. Both on its own are great together they are clashing a bit like ntora said about the shaking.. But i feel that the character is showing a too normal pose to have such a heavy effects even tho the scene (surroundings) allows it, it looks weird to look at a female with a non powerful pose and see the effects around her. Maybe if you do the shaking to a minimum i think it will be less aggressive and give it the same calm feeling as the female itself. Adding mist will also give the animation some unity with the background.

This will be a bit of a harsh critique but just keep in mind that the purpose is not to make you sad or lessen your efforts but to give you an idea on how you can improve and make your future efforts even better. So here it comes: The timing missing in this is that your main subject, the woman figure, is in a posture of stopped motion meaning you d expect her to keep moving. She is in the midst of a step and the next thing you visually anticipate is for her to complete. So any animation you have added just makes a still image shake. It does not make it into a "story". On the animation part it was very strong and powerful. The only thing I did not like was the overall shake of the frame that made me feel I am looking at through an approaching vehicle rather than the earth shaking effect I would imagine you went for.
I hope my critique helps more than hurts; it is all in the best of intentions.

I would rather want to see her move her leg to finish her movement.
I think it would really put a bigger impression of the work.
For a first try it is awesome work.
Keep it up I really hope to see more work tlike this

I felt the same way, however, if this is just for experimental purposes - to some degree - the amount of effort needed to actually animate the entire picture is really unnecessary. At the very least, some moving ripples in the water would be nice.

That was an awesome animation.

I agree with one of the critiques though..

It's should end with the climax
like..say... the woman turned back and look at the camera. Something liek that.

It's really good though. :]
Like REALLY good.

I like this too, however I think there are a little 'too' much animation going on. If you just stuck with the blowing hair and the shards of blue glass stuff that rises from the woman, then you wouldn't need to have those pulasting blue orbs of light. Less is more

OH WOW...I saw the original about a year ago and just..wow.. this looks amazing. I agree with
*draco-samhain that the camera could have less movement. Perhaps just a still camera with all of the effects and hair movement? Just a thought really.

I'd like to see a bit of experimentation with the tiniest bit of cloud movement as well <(^.^)>

But overall, freaking amazing!!

BlueWingxx31 [2009-05-24 12:08:07 +0000 UTC]

well yea it is animated with some effects but it really took some time to see that the hair was moving. and just to note, there was little movement which is highly unlikely with all the explosions or something going on around her

an animation- well technically it IS just a couple of pictures that are actually creating an illusion that something is moving, but i think you could, like what the other critiques have said, more climax, and even a bit of the story. quoting my teachers, "yes i can see that its moving, so what?". If we are to only see the beauty of your artwork, then u could have just submitted the art as it is. for Animation, its not Just about beautiful images that are moving, and lovely effects that go with it, but also it has to have a story, or in this case, perhaps a consequence or what happens after the girl stands there and her hair flies and there are explosions around her.

oh darn. school has infected my brain with all these stuff >< i better try to keep my mouth zipped from now on

I really liked it, but I did find it could use a bit more, pizaz. I agree with draco-s that it should be more windy with that choice of music. I know it's demanding for the animator, but it felt like more should be happening, at least with the camera angle. This is really sick none the less. It would be awesome to see more of these.

I don't like the shaking. It makes it apocalyptic. I am sure that's what you meant, but I would prefer it to be semi-serene. The magic emitted looks like light. This piece would be much better as a basic "drawing"/image.

I think it's very cool but I got two points I'd like to make to whoever used AfterFX.

1. It screams videocopilot.com. I suggest that when doing this, try to experiment more, the tuts are not to be used as is, they are meant to give you the tools required to make your own magic

2. The effect cuts off rather abrupt when it gets larger, this is due to the particles hitting the edge of your particle box, to fix it just make the box larger

Hope I helped somewhat, must say it's an awesome idea for an image, I'd love to see some larger scale work on something similar to create some really cool effect with a nice ending as well.
