Description
This is the last surviving drawing of my great-grandfather Nikolai Nikulin, the man from whom I believe part of my art talent was genetically passed down; and this is the story of his life…Nikolai's parents were Russian, but he was born in China and spoke Chinese quite well. When he was 17 years old, he was given a choice- to go study in: America or Soviet Russia.
Being a true patriot he chose Russia.
Time passed and he became a famous railroad engineer. He connected trains together, doubling their power and brought Siberian and Chinese cities together.
He defended Russia when the Chinese attacked the Soviet Railroad and got the OKDVA (Special West Red Soviet army) medal for his heroism- here it is, in his photo: [link]
His drawing skill was so great that he was allowed to draw Lenin’s portrait, and for this he received an incredible photographic album portraying Lenin’s death, which is still held by my grandparents in Novokuznetsk. At the peak of his career, Nikolai was awarded the golden star as “a hero of the Soviet Union” from Stalin, for his achievements in engineering.
The world fell in 1937, when Stalin’s madness created the orders that declared millions of Russians as “enemies of the people” and sentenced them to execution in Soviet labor camps.
When Stalin's “police” was taking everybody from the streets, Nikolai never expected to be taken too. One night he had a strange dream, where he saw his head being half-shaven and on the very next day the police broke down the doors and took him in.
He was sentenced to a death in a Soviet labor camp as “An enemy of the state and a Chinese spy”. His wife appealed for justice and truth, sending Stalin a letter with Nikolai’s medals and drawings, but this letter was intercepted and forever lost.
After Stalin’s death, my great grand mother received a piece of paper that cleared Nikolai of all accusations and a note that his body was “buried in Russia”.
----
This upload is dedicated to him and all the others who stood for unity of mankind yet fell against injustice, to carry on their noble spirit, and so that the value of freedom may never again be forgotten, erased or taken from us.

I have never been so moved by a piece of art before
You never know how many other pieces there are still out there, and what stories they may have behind them. I wonder what the story is behind this picture? Why he drew it, was it from reference? Where was the rosebush?
So many questions I'll never know the answer to.
For appealing to my emotions so much

agreed. There's a jumbled piece of writing on the back of the Rose, saying that "I was using red paint and then..." which ends abruptly in mid sentence.... mysterious!

Politics aside I think it's an amazing story, and great to have a history like that. My family were (and are) just about all militant. Up until my generation just about every member that I know of has been in the army, KGB, or police. I'd love to trace as far back as I can go someday.
The rose looks lovely, and you must keep passing it down.
Do you by any chance have a link/image to the pic your great grandfather did of Lenin?

That's a pity. But at least you know it existed so who knows, maybe it'll pop up somewhere unexpected.

Nikolai Nikulin - artist, engineer, patriot. Victim of a mass murderer, who's name is not fit to be printed on the same page as your great great grandfather's. Long may the memory of Nikolai Nikulin live, how that you have shared his life with us here on dA. Thank you.
I am compiling a honor role of artists and intellectuals who were victims of totalitarians, terrorists, bullies or preventable desasters of any kind. I would be honored if you would concent to me including, Nikolai Nikulin among them. [link]
I would also be greatful if you have any ideas to make my memorial better. For example I could call it 'The Rose list' and Nikolai Nikulin's drawing could become a symbol for these amazing people. It is up to you.
Art forever

sounds grand.
Feel free to use the rose for your list and add my great-grand faher to the list as well and credit the rose to him.
I don't know when exactly he died though... It happened around 1940's, somewhere in the Soviet labour camps.

Sorry for the delay in this reply.
Thank you so much for permission to use your grandfather's rose drawing in my list. if you come across any further information, please let me know.
Everyone on the current list is already 'safe' because their existance is a matter of diverse public record.
As the moment i am thinking of running a new list for artists that are unknown to history as yet, like your grandfather. I am hoping to preserve the memory of other artists and intellectuals who are in great danger of disapearing forever form history. This is the list I am thinking of calling 'The Rose List'.

Wow. Just...wow. Flawless. The rose looks so real, like it's about to come right off the paper. Just beautiful. Your great-grandfather was a poet at heart. Horrible....all that beauty cut short in war.

Not only is the drawing amazing, but the aging of the paper gives this rose a destinct quality!
What a truely wonderful tribute to your great-grandfather. May the tragedy of the terrible injustice in his life be overshadowed by the wonder of the man that he was and his peaceful eternal rest. I salute ikolai Nikulin and wish blessing and well being on the entirety of his family.

hereditary talent... not to brag but my grandpa, uncle and dad are great artist... so i know how proud u must've been of your great-granpa... Interesting story... i'm sorry bout it... but i must say, to that kind of heroism!
the funny thing is... Stalin... the man who awarded him is the man who executed him... gahh... politics are never clean...
Anyway, the rose is lovely... there are meanings in that rose... but it'll be an exposure if I interpret it... lol! but yes, the meaning is deep... well, it's very nice of u to show it!
To Nikolai
