Description
This is the last surviving drawing of my great-grandfather Nikolai Nikulin, the man from whom I believe part of my art talent was genetically passed down; and this is the story of his life…Nikolai's parents were Russian, but he was born in China and spoke Chinese quite well. When he was 17 years old, he was given a choice- to go study in: America or Soviet Russia.
Being a true patriot he chose Russia.
Time passed and he became a famous railroad engineer. He connected trains together, doubling their power and brought Siberian and Chinese cities together.
He defended Russia when the Chinese attacked the Soviet Railroad and got the OKDVA (Special West Red Soviet army) medal for his heroism- here it is, in his photo: [link]
His drawing skill was so great that he was allowed to draw Lenin’s portrait, and for this he received an incredible photographic album portraying Lenin’s death, which is still held by my grandparents in Novokuznetsk. At the peak of his career, Nikolai was awarded the golden star as “a hero of the Soviet Union” from Stalin, for his achievements in engineering.
The world fell in 1937, when Stalin’s madness created the orders that declared millions of Russians as “enemies of the people” and sentenced them to execution in Soviet labor camps.
When Stalin's “police” was taking everybody from the streets, Nikolai never expected to be taken too. One night he had a strange dream, where he saw his head being half-shaven and on the very next day the police broke down the doors and took him in.
He was sentenced to a death in a Soviet labor camp as “An enemy of the state and a Chinese spy”. His wife appealed for justice and truth, sending Stalin a letter with Nikolai’s medals and drawings, but this letter was intercepted and forever lost.
After Stalin’s death, my great grand mother received a piece of paper that cleared Nikolai of all accusations and a note that his body was “buried in Russia”.

This upload is dedicated to him and all the others who stood for unity of mankind yet fell against injustice, to carry on their noble spirit, and so that the value of freedom may never again be forgotten, erased or taken from us.

Oh wow what a great story! Your grandfather was a very good man! My grandfather was a motorcycle messanger in WWII and he was also a great man. Seems like more interesting things happened to people back in the early 1900's, I wonder what the world would be like if things were as they used to be...

thanks! 1900 was quite a strange time indeed, a time when the industrial revolution took on the face of war.

*nod nod. Have you ever wondered how different the world would be if the Japanese or Hitler won? Man the world would be more chaotic than it is already I think.

Yep, a phone call would work, but meeting them in person from such a long time ago would probably do it more justice. I remember my grandmother used to have an actual chest just full of photographs, there must have been hundreds of them. Like this rose that has survived, I too would like to know if there is any physical evidence leftover from my ancestors. It would be pretty cool I think.

I think it's really amazing that you know that much about your family history. I really don't know much of anything about my family's past and it's kind of sad. Even though it's a sad thing that happened to your great-grandfather, you still know his story.

Wow, thats a great drawing, your great-grandfather must have been a damn good artist.
That is really just wrong the way he died. After defending Russia from the Chinese, recieving a medal for his efforts, and the Golden Star from Stalin, i find it absolutely stupid that he was executed for suspicion of being a 'Chinese spy'
Damn Stalin...

It's the most beautiful rose I've ever seen. Those times, when your great-grandfather lived were difficult, and most of those, who had been killed then were innocent. I'm from Poland, it's quite close to Russia, so I know something about it. I give you a fav (or should I say 'I give your great-grandfather a fav'?)

Lenin screwed soviet. Stalin was the natural continuation of the sentralistic and elitist politics, I believe

The revolution screwed a lot of people: those that tried to get freedom got tyranny and those that had freedom just got killed.
