I meant to ask whether it was something that eats souls, which is unpleasant, or something that ferries souls to the next world, which is kinda nice. Going by the description it could be either thing and I kinda liked the idea that it is scary but means no harm.Β

Β Thanks! yeah he's supposed to be a demon/entity of sorts, whether he's evil, benevolent or nice is up to you! maybe the old man died quite peacefully and he's just there to carry him to the other side! Or maybe he ripped his soul out painfully while he was weak and unable to fight back in the hospital.
